Using Optical Image Stabalizer: Good, bad?

I tried a search on the forum but couldn't find an answer. I'm wondering if the OIS results in any loss of image quality. I know that non-optical solutions do for sure, but I've heard conflicting info on optical.

Thanks! :)

yes.. just dont use it when there is supposed to be camera movement, like on a tripod or stedicam or jib.

That makes sense. Thanks.

BTW, I really like your forum. It's so civil, you'd almost think it wasn't on the internet.

ha ha dont worry.. it has its uncivil moments :)

I just wish I could 'turn up' my OIS a bit - maybe about 20% - it can't quite keep up with my jitters !!! :P

If there's no image loss, why is that?

Re: Using Optical Image Stabalizer: Good, bad?

Ah, something I actually know. ;D

It's because you won't get the smooth pans and tilts you're after since the OIS will be trying to compensate for the tripod head movements.

Re: Using Optical Image Stabalizer: Good, bad?

Yes indeed.. I just shot a commercial today that involved using a glidecam/batcam shot. This was the most obvious problem with OIS that I ever experienced, I dont know if it was because of the movements required with the ois or all the smoke in the room but it was twitchey as hell and had to turn it off.

Handheld though, when trying to be still, it works very well.

Re: Using Optical Image Stabalizer: Good, bad?

Jarred you say it's good handheld if your trying to keep it still, is it an issue if you are doing moving handheld shots?

Re: Using Optical Image Stabalizer: Good, bad?

if your moving with a handheld shot its generally fairly good, because it emphasizes correcting the up and down movements, and when you walk that is usually the way the shakes happen.

I'm not sure I understand. Any OIS tends to soften the image over shooting with it off (on a tripod). Granted it's subtle, but when editing in uncompressed one can see a difference.

While the 100's is great, I tend to leave it off, unless I am hand-holding... and with 24p I believe this forum was recommending to have it off?

Re: Using Optical Image Stabalizer: Good, bad?

Optical OIS does not change image quality per definition, since the compensation is done opticaly before the light arrives to the CCD.

On the other hand, is completely correct to switch off the OIS (optical or electronic, although more the electronic) since the OIS algorithm tries to correct something that has no to be corrected, like a PAN movement or tilt when the cam is on a tripod.
