Using one-shot mode for time lapse

I believe my DVC30 one-shot mode has an equivalent function on the DVX. I would like to find a way of triggering it from my laptop over firewire or pehaps via the cam remote jack. I need to capture images at intervals such that I can record significant activity over a period of 10 hours without changing tapes. How do you guys make use of this function?

Re: Using one-shot mode for time lapse

I was wondering the same thing. I tried it recently and it just recorded something once instead of intervals. If that is the case why not just shoot regular and speed up the footage in post?

Re: Using one-shot mode for time lapse

On the DVX there are two seetings to interval recording, one determines the length of exposure and the other how many exposures over time. So you can record for half a second every ten seconds or whatever. I used this function a couple of times and it works well just have to adjust speed in post. The tech stuff is in the manual. Hope this helps

Do you need to control it via the laptop? If not then you should be able to use the interval mode built into the dvx.

Otherwise, find yourself an image capture application that can capture from firewire. Then you let the app capture directly from the dvx without any writing to tape.

Re: Using one-shot mode for time lapse

You don't need your laptop. Just go into "interval record mode" and set how long (1/2 sec to 2 sec) and what interval. If you want to use your laptop, a great program is Istopmotion. The "one shot" mode is for stop animation. You'll have to physically trigger it yourself or hook it into a computer.

Which will give you more capture options than those in camera, and you won't have to use a tape/rack up hours on the camera.

Another way, one that I'm playing with, using a remote timer and a digital camera (Canon 10D and Canon TC80N3 Timer Remote) to take 1 shot every second. You'll have a much higher resolution (zoom and pan options in post).

But 10hrs will easily work with the built in interval record.
