Using ND filters indoors?

newbie question

Has anyone suggestions on ways to create shallow DOF indoors without expensive adapters.

For outdoors i tested with a ND .4 filter which gave the background a nice out of focus effect.
For indoors i tested with the same setup and needed lot of lights which gave me hard shadows and a background that was to dark as end result.

thanks

Try raising the overall brightness first by aiming lights at the ceiling and walls.

Then light your subject to get the modelling you want.
