hey guys - i know the general consensus is that u don't use 83min tapes for the dvx100a(e) - it even says it in the manual - yes i read the manual..

O BTW just got the camera.. finally... YAEEEE

reason i post this thread is because i just got a package (that the distributors set up) and it was packaged with 5x 83min MQ tapes...

any opinions on this?

from what i have read in the searches, it is because they tape is thinner to allow for a longer amount of running time - so quality is an issue - I cant remem if it could lead to problems with the camera or just meant quality of image "MIGHT" suffer... and off course that using it more than once was not recommended....

Hey Justin

Congrats on getting your camera! (BTW I paid to have mine repaired and am now keeping it wrapped in cotton wool till I get a proper rain cover for it!)

I believe I was told that the reason not to use the 83 min tapes is that they are heavier (as there's more tape on them) for the heads to pull through and so they put more strain on your heads. Basically it sounded like you would be wearing out your heads quicker.

Good luck with the camera - sorry to read about the bad pixel, but don't worry, it'll be fixed. When I first got mine it gave me an 'Unloading lock' error and the tape wouldn't eject. They had to replace the whole tape door assembly. But it was fine after that. Anyway, don't let it get you down, you've purchased a great camera.

ya i just called rexel today - and they said they would fix - good thing is that they have the part.... :)

sad thing is i wanted a replacement... :(

BTW how much did it cost to repair - i imagined it woulda cost quite a bit...

It cost over $2400 to get it fixed. Plus they can't guarantee anything. But I can't afford a new one, so what can you do? Get insurance and a rain cover, I guess! Fortunately my heads were fine, otherwise it would have been over $3k and really begging the question of whether or not it was worth fixing.

In your position I'd be a bit pissed off about not getting a replacement too. I mean, you buy something brand new, it should work. Without problems. It's one of the reasons people pay the premium for a new item instead of getting a cheaper second hand one. Anyway, that's just my 2 cents worth. I don't think they'll take too long to fix it for you, probably just a few days. Good luck!
