I have an idea for fixing problems with AGC cranking up the volume to fill in the quiet parts of dialog. If you are an imovie user or have an input into this strategy, I'd like your input.
I'm working on a series of short educational videos and they include some skits where dialog is important. I purchased two microphones: a Audio Technica AT 897 to use with a Zoom h4n, and an ATR 55 to plug into the camera (I'm aware these are not the best but that's the budget.) I'll put both of these on the boom and have two choices for sound. When the camera sound is not terrible I plan on using it, and where the second system sound is notably better, I'll import that file, replace the dialog, save it and then reimport the file to imovie. The extra steps are what I'm trying to avoid.
I have an idea to skip some of this where the AGC makes quiet areas unusable by turning up the volume. I will use the "Split Clip" function in imovie to isolate the portions of the clip with bad sound, unlink and discard the audio and add room tone to the whole thing, effectively masking the holes I made.
When the camera sound is too poor qualitly, I'll go the extra step to replace it with the zoom track. What do you think?
