Using HVX200 to transfer footage

Wanting to import some tape footage into my NLE and must admit I have never done it with the HVX200 before. I have so far always used the P2 cards, not the tape. Looked at manual didn't find info I needed.

What cable do I use to connect the camera to the PC to capture footage from the TAPE (as opposed to USB download mxf files from P2 Card)... Do I use the same USB cable? Any special in camera setting I need to change before starting capture?

What's the procedure on that?

Also does anyone know how to transfer some DVD footage from my DVD player into my HVX200 so that I can then import it into my NLE? Yes, I do have permission from DVD author ;)

Any help appreciated. Looked at manual and tried a few things this morning but none worked... Rats.

THANKS!

use firewire for capturing tape. with the camera turned off, flip the switch from p2 to tape on the back of the cam, beside the battery.

not sure if the hvx does analog to digital pass thru, you may want to look into a dvd ripping application.

anyone else care to chime on on the pass through?

Ok so get a firewire cable? I currently dont have one. I gather the USB cable will not work? or are you on a mac/ I am on PC, maybe i shoud have mentioned that in my post.. Do I still need to buy a firewire then?

About DVD transfer, my intention was to first record the footage, I was hoping to record it on my P2 cards  - is that possible? THEN download mxf files to Vegas.

help?

Even if it's possible, I would recommend not copying from DVD to P2. It's compressed going onto the DVD, then it'll compress it again onto the P2 card, then it'll compress again when you export out of your NLE, and every step, you're losing quality. Best is to rip straight from the DVD with a DVD ripping application, and better if you can get the original footage before it was recorded to DVD. Handbrake is a good ripper for Macs, but I don't know of a good PC one.

And as for capturing from tape, I would also suggest not using the HVX for this if you can get your hands on a cheaper DV cam. It's just that it puts wear on the heads, and I'm kind of a stickler for that. If you really want to, mangler answered that question, and yes, you will need a Firewire cable. I got one at Best Buy for like $30-$35 or so, that came with 6-pin to 4-pin adapters for either end. It'll save you time in the long run with P2 transfers as well, since it's faster than USB.
