Using HMC40 Tools to Judge lighting for GreenScreen

Heartfelt

Well-known member
Hey guys,

I am shooting green screen tests for a business project. After doing a lot of research and
buying the HMC40 book (awesome), I have begun test shots and wanted to run my procedure
by more knowledgeable folk.

I don't have a light meter. My lighting is a mix of softboxes for subject and clamp lights for the
screen, all daylight based.

Procedure:
At present, this is what I am doing:
  • Set lighting in place
  • Use the waveform to verify the consistency (thinner line)
  • With Waveform/Iris, adjusting the iris to bring the background between 50-60%
  • Use 18% gray card to set white balance

The thought is to aim for people's faces to meter at about 70%.

Does this sound in appropriate order and procedurally sound? What would you do different, if anything?

Thanks in advance for your comment.

I found a good practice in post, to enhance the greens with color correction before to apply the chroma filter.
In studio the waveform included with our camera is great

Felipe, yes the waveform is great.

What correction do you do before keying in post? It seems to me that doing any correction with green would affect all of the clip's contents, not just the background.

You have two valuable tools in Sony Vegas pro, I guess in others too, is Color corrector secondary, it has a preset named saturate greens,
This same filter also allows you to create a mask on areas like the background to saturate greens

Despite that is 4:2:2 interpolated, Avi cineform codec boosts performance in post, including green screen of course.
Since I got Neo cineform 1 month ago, will not edit any more without it, is great

My mistake. I confused it with Edius Neo.

No way, Editing with Sony Vegas Pro, Cineform is a codec, with a little program that converts your HMC40 footage to Avi Cineform codec, enlarging the color space to 4:2:2, and makes a dream the editing plus the clips hold much better to color correction or green screen

Interesting as I just bought a smoking i7 computer with a solid state drive for editing in Vegas... from "my" HMC40 and still finding hiccups with any plugins on the timeline.

Do you find the cineform codec easier to edit, with regard to a solid preview ability?

Yes, I have an old dual core, and the codec boosted 200% my editing, in your case with your i7, the same, in particular in complex projects, with layers
filters corrections etc. They have a free trial, go for it
