GH3 Using HDMI out Headphone Monitor switches to Rec Sound

I just got a smallHD AC7 monitor for my GH3 and I noticed that when I have the monitor plugged into the HDMI out on the GH3,
the Headphone monitoring menu selection switches to Rec Sound instead of Realtime monitoring which is what I want to do while shooting.
This makes sense if I were playing back the footage and viewing on an external HDMI monitor, but I'm using the monitor during recording and I don't
want to hear an audio delay. Has anyone experienced this?
 
Forgot to mention that the headphone monitoring menu selection is grayed out as long as the HDMI monitor is plugged in.
Once the monitor is unplugged the menu item becomes switchable. I tried switching it to real time before plugging in the monitor, but once
the monitor is plugged in, the menu item switches to rec sound and becomes grayed out.
