Using external harddrives

Can i edit my FCP footage if all the raw data is stored on an external firewire hard drive. As in, will it be fast enough. My Macbookpro just doesn't have the room for buckets of HD footage, and I was hoping to simply edit straight off the harddrive.

Yes, you can edit off an external FW HDD.

But it would help if you could identify what cam you are using. HD falls into a number of varying bandwidths.

ive experience SOME slow performance when editing DVCPRO HD off a single drive.
NO issues when editing off a RAID
