Using dvx to backup tapes?

I need to backup some important tapes shot in 24p normal on the dvx. I have a small 3 ccd panasonic camcorder which I use as a deck (PG !80) is there a way to back up my tapes without losing any quality? Which should be doing the recording? Any tips appreciated!

It'll be a bit-for-bit transfer, so you will not lose any quality. Digital recording means that as long as you get the 1s and 0s, you've got the identical file.

Does a Word document suffer for being put on CD with a generic CD burner? Of course not. Digital video is exactly the same.

Can anyone help with best way (if possible) to duplicate tapes with dvx and mini dv camcorder?

gotcha, so i need to go via the firewire cable? does the dvx have a vcr record mode?
Yes the dvx has a vcr record mode. If your using the 100B its inside the lcd and it says vcr record. You just push the grey and the red button at the same time. I believe its the same with the 100 and 100A models, however i believe those buttons are placed on top right below the handle.

if i go dv to rca though, it's converting it to an anlog signal, right? i assume i need a dv to dv cable?

I don't know 100% but I don't think that it would be converting it to an analog signal because your taking DV footage and recording it onto another DV device/tape. According to Barry's book if you set the DV out in your AV In/Out Setup Settings menu to on, you can use the dvx as a converter so that you can have analog video come in through the RCA and go out through the firewire. Meaning its being digitized without recording to tape. So it seems that by simply recording to DV tape your digitizing your footage anyway.
If someone else could clear that up It'd be apprciated.

But if you just want to go camera to camera via firewire, you'd need a 4 pin to 4 pin.

the footage will be eactly the same no loss of quality..from one mini dv machine/camera to another.. via firewire of course.
