Using DVX + Canon XL1 "Need Settings Help"

Hi all, I have never used the Canon XL1 and was wondering if the camera will mesh well with A DVX 100b.

I own the DVX and will be doing a 2 camera shoot this weekend. The other individual owns a XL1 S.

We were wondering if people have had good luck matching the color and camera settings with these two cameras?

Also, we are trying to get a filmic look to the piece, however me shooting 24p would blow the chance of our cameras looking alike due to the XL1 not having 24p options.

Would you use 30p on the DVX to match the XL1s cinema mode?

I do not know about the XL1 if it accepts scen file settings but at dvinfo.net somebody posted a scene file setting for the XHA1 to emulate the PANALOOK (DVX100) color. See link below.
I have tested it and they are pretty close, can save you some time in post.

NOTE: I have the DVX100B and the XHA1 and I also have a shoot this weekend what a coincidence.

Hope this helps.

I have shot with that combo before (well, 100A...).

I didn't have the opportunity to spend a lot of time before hand trying to match them, but what I got was pretty unusable. In the final piece there is no Canon footage at all. Of course, spend a little more time and you may get something out of it.

ive shot with the xl1 and the dvc 80 i was able to set it up to where they both looked pretty much the same.

The XL1S does not have progressive CCD's, so it's FRAME mode will not provide the same resolution as the DVX or XL2, in fact it was much maligned since it's basically just a field double.

The XL1S widescreen mode and DVX squeeze mode are very similar, an in-camera crop and zoom.

Even if you manually white balance both cams against the same reference, they will still have different looks. You can try to adjust color settings on the XL1S to compensate, but probably your best bet is to use the appropriate white balance default on both cameras (they both have 3.2k and 5.6k presets), and shoot a test card with both cameras. This will give you a reference to do a quick color correction on both cameras in post.

The cameras also have different looks in terms of detail, noise, and gamma curves. You'll want to find a curve on the DVX that matches the XL1S. You may need to adjust the Detail setting on both cameras. The DVX is probably a bit noisier, so you might turn up Coring to reduce some noise.

Just some thoughts, but your best bet is to shoot a test chart so you have an objective way to fix any differences in post.

Thanks everyone for the input. So here is the results of day one. We started out the shoot as a two camera shoot. We set the XL1 to movie mode (30 fps) and and then we tried to emulate the look and feel with 30p on the DVX. (White balance, F-stops, etc...) Luckily we had monitors to check the color on both cameras. To make a long story short, we ended up removing the xl1 due to contrast and color issues. We just took more angles and shots with the DVX and went with 24p.

Once the director saw the two cameras side by side on the monitors, he felt our story would best be told in the 24p mode.

Over all day one went well, the shots looked great, and the sound was on Que.

Once again, Thank you so much for your input and advise.
