using dvx as deck

hey all: new here...

trying to connect dvx as deck to powerbook g4 laptop and using fcp 5.0.4 to capture dv tape. connected to camera with 4bit to 6bit firewire (ieee-1394) cable. have capture presets, etc. set to dv ntsc easy setup. fcp is not registering camera as deck at all. any thoughts?

thanks in advance.

Make sure you have the camera set to VTR mode, then in FCP go to view, then refresh A/V Devices and it should work fine.

the camera is set to vcr, not camera. i have tried refreshing the a/v device a few times. nothing's changed. this time when i refreshed the a/v device i then went to log and capture and fcp quit on me. did i mention that i have a 4 bit to 6 bit firewire connection from camera to laptop? also, a lacie drive hooked up by fw800? any more help? thanks.

I use the same setup that you do, A Powerbook, Fw800 drive and Camera, but I do not use my DVX as a deck ever. Do you have another camera you can use to test your cable? And have you ever been able to capture using that particulat 4-to- 6 pin cable? I have had to throw a few away over the years. If you do have another camera to test with that would be a good thing.

i have used the 4-6bit cable, which is new, as i tried to capture from a sony hdv camera which recorded in hdv onto dv tapes and fcp recognized the deck as a capture device and i could control it through fcp but i could never get an image on the log and capture window--only in the lcd screen on the camera. is this sounding more and more like a cable issue?

Use the mouse to click the "play" button on the capture window and things should start to happen. Most important that you can see timecode on the cams LCD and aslo see picture there as well.

I also recall reading something that you should have the camera hooked up and plugged in BEFORE you turn the computer on.

It's sounding like a DVX firewire port issue to me since it didn't work at all the the DVX but it did with the sony. You most likely didn't se an image on the capture screen with the sony because it was set to do HDV on standard DV.

Has anyone had any experience(good or bad) with this deck? I have a good opportunity of picking one up with 20 hours on the heads and 6 month's of warranty left on it for $1600.00 and wanted to get some feedback on this. Thanks...:grin:

Since the Log and Capture window said "VTR OK", it sounds like the computer and camera are communicating.

Go to "Log and Capture" in FC, click on the "Capture Settings" tab, and verify that you are using "Firewire NTSC" to control your camera.

If that doesn't work, go back and set it to "non controllable device" and try to "Capture Now" in FC and press [play] on the camera rather than on the log and capture controls. If you can record in Capture Now, then its most likely the control settings that are off.

Try to capture via Quicktime to minimize chances, that the software-settings are causing the problems.
Good luck.
