What about getting that cheapie camera, hooking it up to yer DVX, and using it as an external 'record' deck while shooting, to avoid running the DVX tape-system, period?
Is it possible to bypass the tape system? I use a Quickcapture (digital capture unit) but must still run a tape in the camera. It's actually a good thing, though, because it gives me a tape backup just incase anything funky happens with the Quickcapture, including operator error.
Yeah, I'm with the rest. It's really worth the teeny investment to just get a little 1 chip. You can always get a floor model (or "open box" one) from an electronics chain that's dirt cheap, beat up or may even have something broken on it, but know that the heads have never been touched so if it works the deck should be like new. Saves a lot of money, thats what I did and it's golden. The Canon ZR models are always cheap and pretty reliable, I have 2; 1 for deck and 1 for playback tests away from home. I've only played back on the DVX on set for the Cranky sound man.
