Using camera and mic in the rain?

Anyone have any tips for using the dvx 100a in the rain? What kind of precautions should you take, etc?

Thanks

Precautions? Er, ah... keep it dry?
Just messin with ya. I love to state the obvious.
I always carry a few produce baggies from the supermarket in my DVX case.
Simple, cheap, works.
When it's time to use one just take off the lens hood, put the baggy over the camera, open side down. It'll even cover the tripod head. Then replace the lens hood. Next pull or cut out the baggy part thats over the lens (inside the hood). The hood should hold the rest of the baggy in place just fine.

Wrap the camera into a plastic bag. You should be able to shot in rain condition, but it's not the safest way.

Ehhh, I'd rather not risk destroying my camera... So, I use those disposable raincoats. yeah, so what if they cost $0.99. But, it's better than having an accedental tear in your plastic baggy, which is easy to do and has happened. Accedental tears can cause a life time of unplanned change... Ask people who ended up having children because their condum was cheap and broke... Hehehe.

If you really want to and you shoot often enough on rainy days, then I would suggest investing in a professional rain cover. If not, use something that is... more durable.

You guys are brave!!!

The Kata Raincover sells for under 80 dollars... It's a solid investment. I wouldn't leave my baby outdoors without one! I use it mostly for time lapse photography because it's large enough to completely surround a 100mm bowl fluid head and protect both camera and head if rain hits during the time lapse. I also used it once while filming some friends playing volleyball in the rain! Worked great!

Sweet, you have any of your timelapse footage on the interweb? I'd like to see! some! That is some of my favorite stuff to watch.

Peace,

KATA, KATA, KATA oh and did I mention KATA?

As was mentioned, it is affordable and it works great! You have easy access to the controls, and it will cover your mic as well. As an added side benifit it looks a hell of a lot better then the plastic bag does which is important when filming infront of clients.

GET A KATA!

Sorry for brining this thread back, but is this the kata people are talking about?

No apologies required. I don't think that we ment to obfuscate which kata we were talking about - Yes you are correct, that is the kata we were refering to     .

Haha, actually that's the one made by Petrol. It's on backorder right now as far as Rush tells me. He says Petrol doesn't even have any of em. TI think this might be the one you're looking for........made by that other company.......yknow, Kata

Kata CRC-14

Either one will work I guess. Actually, I'd say the Petrol's better for sand (although EVS doesn't have any at the moment) because it looks more enclosed at the bottom. I don't if the Kata has a cinch strap. You could always wrap it up with some Gaff tape if the wind is blowing and you're afraid of the sand getting in there.

Kata is the way.

Look, anything made by an Israeli company that also makes Kevlar vests has gotta be good.

I love my Kata... yes, I really do!

I used it on a whale-watching trip recently and the 5 major splashes I was saved from made the cover worth its weight in gold. Hefty plastic bags and the like are sketchy, and most of them are opaque, so you can't see your meters, dials, and switches.

Plus, with the velcro bottom, I was able to protect the camera while on a SteadyStick with full control of all settings.
