Using bounce and scrim outside

I am a fan of C-Stands but the Maxi-Steels are good as well. I have Manfrotto-Avenger versions of these and for one-man band the Maxi-Steels are really the ticket. You can pack them into a vehicle (that isn't a grip truck) without them flopping around, they store better, etc. I won't give up my C-Stands. They are too useful but these are good as well. You can't beat the cost and they have the Matthew's knobs and other design considerations on them so you know they are going to last and be uber-functional.

I've got several avenger turtle base c's, some of 'em are nearing 20 years old - I bought a "budget" brand once, and the casting that holds the legs together cracked after a few months. "Impact" is sort of B&H house brand, so they may be better quality - their big-ass grip heads are a fantastic deal. I just don't find c's to be as sturdy as a tripod-leg stand (a good one anyway, like a beefy) but you really need a variety of leg-styles for complex setups if you need to get a lot of feet in one place. It's transporting the turtle bases that gets to be a drag for me, put three or four in a long crate and then nobody wants to carry the thing. I wouldn't give them up, but newbies seem to think "c stands" are the only stands there are when you stop buying cheap.

Let me ask a question. What do ya'll do about stands on uneven ground? I know that some stands have the "Rocky Mountain Leg" and some C-stands are adjustable for that. Without that, I have on occasion had to resort to "Hillbilly Ingenuity", with varying success. Any suggestions?

Sand bag the crap out of it.
Seriously think safety first. The last thing you want is a blazing hot fixture to fall on someone or something and cause harm or a fire.

That's why we do it?! I thought it was to save the lamps from getting broken landing on that guys head :S Glass costs money....! ;)

Amazing!

But I swear, if anyone mentions the word "gamechanger" again, I gonna shoot him.

We will use "Game Changing" gear to fulfill the director's "VISON"....AHHHHHGGGGG!!!!.....

Sorry. I had to.

Yeah, I am a sand baggin' fool actually... Don't leave home with out them.

Adorama's been selling the Kupo combo stand with free shipping for about $155. Looks like a deal if Kupo's quality holds up. Seems like they're an Asian manufcaturer that wants to take on the big guys.

The Rocky leg is a heck of a thing to have in those cases.

Funny, new year's eve we had our annual blowout of 60-70 people, but it was rainy in dallas. 4 beefy babies and a huge Harbor Freight tarp and the deck was all set for the smokers and a wood-fired grill (which you could forge king arthur's sword in - great for a crusted steak!). The Rocky legs let me get the stands across a couple levels of deck. Other than that, I haven't done much outdoor shooting where I ran out of rocky-leg stands.
