Using an old Avid project in a new Avid?

I'm editing on Avid Xpress Pro 5.7, which uses .mxf files as its base media file. Now back a few years ago when I started with Avid, the program used OMFI and AIFF files as it's base. How can I open one of these older projects in the new MXF oriented Avid? I opened the project just fine, but all of the media is offline and Avid refuses to recognize the omf or aif files as valid media. I tried both relinking and looking with the media tool to no avail. I even attempted to import an omf file directly, which also failed.

Anybody know a workaround? I'm sure it's something stupid.

Do you have the media in the right place?

For example:

Lets call your media drive M:.

MXF Media goes inside a numbered folder like this:

M:\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\1\[media]

OMF media goes here:

M:\OMFI MediaFiles\[media]

If your OMF media is anywhere else, Avid won't see it. Let us know if you already have this set up like above (note--the spelling, capitalization, and spacing must be identical to the above--any variation and Avid won't see your media).

Otherwise, there's no reason you can't mix MXF with OMF media, unless maybe you're trying to bring it into an HD project. You may need to switch to an SD project and transcode the OMF media to MXF. There is no HD OMF--it's all MXF.

Michael.

I have the file hierarchy set up fine, and the project itself that I'm opening is from the original, so it isn't a new project im trying to bring the media into. I can see the sequence timeline set up, but the media won't connect and the omf files won't appear in the interface even though they are in the proper folder on the root of the drive.

If you have the original source tapes, just BATCH RECAPTURE them, graphics, just BATCH IMPORT....the project will rebuild as mxf files and you can re-render and spit it out after your new changes. I do it all the time.
