USING AN iPOD to hold video....

There is an article in the latest issue of MILLIMETER magazine page 103 to be exact. Not sure if the article is on their website but it might (www.millimeter.com).

In a nutshell, they were able to play back HD footage from an ipod. According to the article the testers they filled the ipod up with 9gigs of HD video and checked out the data rate. They went on to say the iPOD played back HD footage for 24 hours without a single dropped frame.

The company that did the test is called Blackmagic Design. They also said the ipod can hold full length feature movies as well. They didn't say which iPod they used for their test but I would imagine it was the new 60gig ipod.

highly doubt that..not only does the hardrive not spin fast enought, but the battery cant even play a full divx or xvid movie of 700 megs for more then an hour or so....

a 6 mb mp3 will play fine for 10 hours becuase it buffers the information when it cues up the song, and it can continue to play with out accessing the hardrive....

Jan's said before that you could use an iPod to hold P2 data. I didn't know anybody'd tried to play it back at full resolution before. Seems reasonable, the DVCPRO-HD data rate is only about 14mb/sec, not too much of a strain for modern hard drives.

You can setup the iPod so that it also acts as an external drive. Great for storing data on. So they probably did just that. And since the firewire cable also provides power the iPod wouldn't run down.

Simple test for anyone out there that has an iPod. Go into the iTunes iPod preferences and check "Enable disk use". Your iPod will then show up as another disk drive in Explorer/Finder. Copy a video to the drive and then try playing it from that drive.

I think somebody might be full of bologna!!

Isn't DVCPRO-HD 100mbps? That's 12.5MBps or 750MB per minute. So they used 9 gigs and loaded up approximately 12 minutes of DVCPRO-HD video and played it back for 24 hours and it didn't miss a beat? If it's true that would be pretty amazing for a little 4200rpm drive. If any of my calculations or numbers are off....please correct, but again....if it *IS* true.....it will be somewhat useful when the new HDX comes out. ~reservoir~

Your numbers are correct. I dont' see why it would be unreasonable for it to do so... most laptop 4200rpm drives have a rated throughput capacity of at least 13mB/sec, don't they? I looked at a quick review on Toms Hardware Guide of 2.5" drives, on average they were sustaining about 25mB/sec, the slowest were still at 13.4mB/sec. Even the little 1.8" drive they just tested could handle between 10 and 20 mB/sec, so maybe it couldn't sustain DVCProHD data rates over the entire surface of the disk, but from a 9gb partition on the outer rim of the platter, well, that sounds reasonable...

Doesn't it?

Probably so Barry. Sounds reasonable to me I guess, I just wonder if any of the details were at all *fudged* in any way. I can understand completely why the iPod is a poor solution for capturing. From my experience that usually takes about 10-13 Gigs per hour. Not sure what the data rate is for that, but I've read that Mac users have tried capturing to the iPod but it would drop frames, lockup and crash, etc. But as far as playing back any video files, I would think it could manage. ~reservoir~
