Using an imac as a monitor for dvx?

We will be doing puppet work and I have an old imac in the basement that I thought I might use as the under-the-table monitor for the puppeteers to use. Any thoughts on how to set that up? It has USB ports. Do I need to have an editing program installed or can I set it to just feed thru?

Thanks for that but I think my request is getting lost here. Looking for a way to be able to see what the DVX is shooting from under the puppeteering table. The image does not need to be calibrated, etc, it just needs to show the puppeteers what is going on while they manipulate the puppets. Can the imac be connected to the dvx to accomplish this?

I have an old imac I already own that, if I can use it for this purpose, would be better than spending $200 on a new monitor.

most video editing programs allow you to do this in the capture options i think?

I know i've done it with both Adobe Premiere and Sony Vegas. I think FCP would be fine as well.

I appreciate all these other options, but does anyone know for sure if you can or can't just hook up the Dvx to an old USB imac for this purpose??? Just as it sits with no buying of new software, no buying of tvs, etc. Has anyone ever tried to do what I am asking?

From what I have seen, you usually cannot monitor or capture through USB, and this is especially true without a program dedicated to this. In other words, I don't think that you can monitor without getting a program or using firewire. But, there are many freeware monitoring programs out there. Just search "monitor" or "capture" on www.versiontracker.com. Also, there is a demo of Montior Magic available at http://www.bigmugsoftware.com/monitor/ so if you only need it for the fourteen days that the trial lasts after installation then you are set. But, I am not sure if you can use USB. You might need firewire but I would say its worth a try.
