GH4 Using an external monitor with the GH4

I tried setting up my Small HD DP4 and connecting it to my Panasonic GH4 for monitoring, I was recording in 4K but auto down-converting. When I did I noticed that I could hear an audio delay in my headset as I was recording, much to my disappointment if the DP4 is connected to the camera via HDMI I cannot use the audio recorded in camera. The problem is that by connecting an external monitor via a HDMI cable something seems to create a delay and the audio is not recorded properly. I’ve looked through the menu options but so far haven’t been able to find a solution. Has anyone had a similar problem and if you have please let me know if and how you’ve solved it. I'm stumped............."Big Time"on this one.

Did you actually record footage? It will look out of sync on the monitor, but the recorded footage will be fine. That said, there is a menu item SOUND OUTPUT. Switch it to REC SOUND from REALTIME and it should be in sync with the monitor. This issue is that the HDMI out when down converting to 4k introduces a very noticeable delay on the external monitor. The audio you are hearing is actually correct. It's the monitor that's lagging. Switching to REC sound you hear the audio with the same lag that goes out to the monitor.

The GH4 has known issues with audio/video lag using the HDMI port. it's really amazing that Panasonic has added functions like anamorphic and log which require an external monitor/recorder to gain the full benefits, but have not addressed the shortcomings of the HDMI port used for this.

I tried your suggestion and also tried pulling the SD card and playing the clips on my Macbook, the results were the same, I still had a audio delay on clips when the monitor was connected to the camera via HDMI. When I remove the HDMI cable from the camera audio is recorded normally without a delay. BTW when a monitor is connected to the GH4 via HDMI the SOUND OUTPUT automatically goes to REC Sound.

Strange. I've never had this problem. I've noticed delay, but not on the recorded clips. Somethings wrong. Maybe try reverting to factory settings.

Ditto. The only delay I ever see with my GH4 footage is the normal 1-2 frame sync-lag that every DSLR or mirrorless camera has. ( Canon 5D can be 3-5 frames out of sync )

I have a SmallHD 7 OLED, and I can tell you that it definitely does not force sound to REC delay when connected. There is a delay for the HDMI picture, as others have noted, but the recorded files are fine.

If no HDMI is connected the processor does not have to downconvert there is nothing there to convert for. Once you hook up the HDMI down converting kicks in and puts extra load on the processor. And something has to give. AF is already slowed down, to get audio without delay the autofocus would have to slow down more. Just for the hell of it if you haven't already put the camera in manual focus do so and see what happens. All that being said the disclaimer is that I am speculating
