I am considering buying either an 800 or a 2000 from AlzoVideo.com as my one and only hard light in addition to two fluorecent panels similar to Kinos but cheaper.
The 2000 seems like a better deal since you get three intensities by being able to turn all three bulbs on and off individually. However, it doesn't seem certain that you would be able to use the light without the softbox and no flags or honeycomb is offered for the bigger 2000s. I wonder if anyone nows wether using it without the soft box is possible and how to control the light.
Also, I read about UV being a concern when you work with these lights. What I didn't understand was if this was a concern with the camera or people. I got a UV filter for my camera and I believe what they might have meant is that a UV filter should be placed on the light because in the discussion it was suggested that one should get something like a Roscoe filter like the #3114. Since I am kinda new to lighting I am left wondering still since I can't find a picture of the filter. I belive it might be a sheet, and that's why I am assuming it would go on the light, that and the fact that lens filters are much more expensive.
Lastly, the ballasts are supposed to be noisy. I was wondering if covering it with a sound blanket would be ok like an other user suggested. Would there be any danger or do these not need to be vented?
