Using a Laptop/FW/capture-proggy for focus check?

After wondering which monitor (LCD or tube) to buy to be able to check focus on the set, I thought about the idea to use my firewire equipped laptop.

The problem: All the Windows software I checked has no 1:1 capturing/preview window (I don't want to capture anyway).
Does anyone know a Windows proggy that decodes and displays the DV stream coming from the firewire port in REAL TIME and FULL SIZE???

Macintosh and FCP does this. I bet Vegas can do it also on the PC.

I have thought about writing such a program. Essentially just a window that shows what's coming in over firewire and does nothing else -- no capture and no editing.

Let's see if anyone else finds an existing program first, and if not I'll see what I can do.

Actually, I checked out the Microsoft DirectShow SDK for sample projects to use as a starting point for writing such a program. One sample does exactly what you need.

The program is called DVApp, and it's a very basic firewire preview/capture program.

Sombody has alrady posted the compiled version online. To get it, go to:

One note -- to preview you have to hit the play button. Otherwise you will see a black screen.

Holy Mama! :o Jarred, that looks really nice... hopefully it's going to be affordable once it really is available on the market..

You still may want to write it from the sample code and "pretty it up."

it costs $750.. ouch. which is too bad, because I betcha they would sell 100x more copies if they priced it under $100.

Jared,

DV Rack sells for $495 and there's a $395 introductory special until the end of July. The product will be available in early August. It has been beta tested extensively with the DVX in both NTSC and PAL.

Can you use FCP4 on a G4 laptop as a field monitor?
