Using a DSLR as a webcam

Would it be possible to use a DSLR as a webcam in a laptop without some external thunderbolt capture card?
I'm trying to think on a way of capturing/broadcasting HD video with a portable set up.

Maybe an HDMI capture card? There are a few HDMI input stream encoders on the market, no computer required for streaming.

The usual way is to use the USB connector and some specific softwere (like this), but those usually drop frames and have lag (it's for skype, not for broadcasting).
