I was just playing around with lighting, and I thought the shadows and detail looked pretty cool.

Thats what I suspected... it crushes the blacks strongly and I can't help but wonder if (when dealing with a limited bitrate lossy codec), crushing excessive noise in cam is not a bad thing...
Yes, nostalgic is superior with sufficient light... but it may be that cinema's crushing is ideal in the context of this camera in low light. (unless one has moved to hdmi recording already)
