using a capture camera?

ok my frined has an older cheap JVC DV camera. AS far as i know it works fine but its a couple years old and its just one of those small consumer "family cams". I was thinking of using this camera just for capturing. I know it will save my heads on my DVX. Will using this camera have any bad effect on the DVX footage when i import it. Like will it be less quality or anything??

2 things to look for: dirty head causing dropped frames & the timecode not transferring properly.

The first is fixable (cleanable). The second...not good if you use timecode for keeping track of what's what.

Other than that, digital is digital, and if all the bits are there, you're golden.

I've been using my old JVC for capture ever since I got my DVX and I've had no problems at all. Everything comes across just like on the DVX. If the heads are OK you should be good to go.

I've been using a Sony TRV38 and had zero problems using it as a deck (it wasn't a bad camera either, until I got my DVX).

But wait....if you use a regular consumer camera to capture...and lets say you filmed in either 24p or 24pa....and play it back on a camera that just records 29.97i frames..and then capture it.

Wouldnt the frame rate and image get messed up?

Nope.

That's where the ever-popular pulldown comes in. The cam doesn't just put 24 frames down, it fiddles and diddles and fills in the gaps with blended frames to make up the difference so ti goes down just like regular video.

But wouldnt u still get like a blurred image then? if it fills in the gaps?

Your editor removes the intervening non-used "frames". They're just there to standardize the format. Pretty cool, huh? :)
