Using 120vac lights on 240vac?

Hello,

I was wondering if I could buy 120VAC lights from the US and use them in Europe in 240VAC. I would probably need a conerter to not let them overheat. Would that work? If so any recommendations? Any experience/problems?

What sort of lights are they? If you mean 120VAC bulbs/lamps the will blow very quickly on 240VAC .

Most Power supplies I have are rated 120-240VAX so they should be OK with the appropreate mains lead.

Why are you buying from the US? Once you have paid shipping and then import duties (and the carriers admin charges) I would have thought you could have bought the same thing in Europe for a similar price. Besides unless they are a particular light they are probably made in the East anyway.
 
I found there are converters that would take care of this.

Yeah you are right, only on these lights there is a 50% discount on them right now, so that should be worth the effort.

Are you talking about tungsten lights? You just need to re-lamp the fixture with 220v lamps. Back when I travelled with hot lights I used Lowel Tota lights and Omni's. Light weight, and 220v lamps are readily available for these lights.

If you're talking about fluorescent or HMI fixtures then you need a dual voltage ballast.

For LED check your light. It might already accept 220v. Or do what I do, and run LEDs on batteries. My battery charger accepts 120-220v.

So I suspect that they don't have them in stock, they will be a special order (if at all) and NOT 50% off. You might also find they are selling off the others at 50% discount to get rid of them. You might like to ponder why.


Besides if there is anything wrong with them when they get to you it is going to be difficult to get your money back especially if it involves shipping them back. (would could go wrong shipping 4 foot glass tubes trans atlantic?)
