GH13 Using 1080 and 720 footage in the same project

About to embark on shooting a small project, a simple music video. After much reading and research, I've pretty much decided to shoot everything at 720p on the GH13 with the lpowell high reliability 40mbps patch. But there's just one thing I'd like to clear up.

The reason I'm going for 720p is that it looks great, and also gives me the option to overcrank any of the footage I shoot so as to get smooth slow mo for some sequences. But.. I've shot test footage at 1080p, and after removing pulldown in Voltaic, I have to admit I love the way the motion looks at 25fps (PAL).

So I figure I have two possible solutions:

One would be to stick to the plan and shoot everything at 720. Then when I go to work with an editor, we'd work in a 25fps timeline and use the footage either at overcranked 25 (when I want slow mo) or converted to 25fps but maintaining the same speed for the majority of the video.

The other would be to shoot at 1080p (and batch removing pulldown) for most of the footage, and then only 720p for sequences that I know are intended for slow mo. Then in the edit session, I presume you'd just reduce the size of the 1080p stuff to match the 720. That way, we'd work again in a 25fps timeline, the 1080 stuff (reduced in size) would play at original speed, and the 720 stuff would be slow mo (or original speed if converted).

My question then, is - which is the smarter way to go? Or am I missing the point entirely? Is shooting at 1080p (just to get native 25p) pointless when it's only going to have to be shrunk down to match other footage shot at 720? Will the conversion process of shrinking it down to 720p size be more damaging to quality (and time consuming) than the process required to get 720p (50fps) to play at 25fps preserving the original speed?

I read the sticky on frame rate conversion tests and watched the examples on vimeo. Just still a little unsure on what's the best approach I should take.

Cheers for any advice. I'll be putting this to my editor too but at this stage just trying to get myself a better understanding of the options.

Hello, you can shoot at 720p and easily drop every other frame serving via avisynth. I'm not an experienced one, but I think everything is better than resizing.

Thanks for the answer. Just to clarify then - if I shoot at 720p and the drop every other frame (I'm sure my editor will have a technique for doing this), then will the motion look the same as what I'm seeing now when I shoot 1080 and remove pulldown? I just tried a test with some 720 footage that I converted using compressor to play at 25 fps. To my eyes it did seem to take the edge off of that overly smooth motion that we tend to associate with video. But the only way I can be sure I guess is to shoot exactly the same footage at 1080 (removing pulldown) and 720 (dropping a frame) and compare them side by side.

To anyone who is rolling their eyes at yet another person going on about getting that "filmic" look.. yes yes I know. But in my defense, I'm preparing a music video and have been watching the test clips I shoot with the song. I'm just trying to honestly find what feels best with the style of the song, not just chasing some notion of filmy = better . In terms of motion style, the two looks that I'm most fond of have been 1080p that has been reverse telecine'd, and 720p when it's used as half speed slow mo. So I'm just trying to figure out the most intelligent way to shoot to get these results.

Cheers for all the pointers.

After filming and editing the 720p 50fps you can run it through MPEG Stream clip and convert it to 25fps making it look more "filmic".
Cheers

This would be a sensible option and is the "safest" way of doing it. With music video there shouldn't really be any rules, but this will most likely give you what you want. If your edit is 720 25, then the 1080 and 720 50 ( with every other frame dropped ) should look fine.

If you're shooting 1080 25, then you shouldn't really need to remove pulldown?

What if you shoot 720p and use shutter speed at 50, the motion will match 24p but I think you will loose the ability to use slow motion. Is that correct folks??
