So for all those who may have been struggling with sub-par performance in Premiere Pro CC on a MacBook Pro, I made a discovery yesterday that should help you out a bit.
Basically it seems that in addition to the downloadable CUDA drivers, Nvidia offer a "beta" GeForce driver for OS X. This replaces and updates the standard OS X GPU driver, but also adds a system preferences pane that allows retrospective switching between drivers. Whilst Nvidia are good at updating their CUDA drivers, it seems as though there's a lack of communication/cooperation between Apple and Nvidia that's keeping the MBPs locked to their 'factory' GPU drivers.
There's a download link (for OS 10.10.5) and instructions here: http://www.tonymacx86.com/graphics/...ate-graphics-drivers-10-10-5-346-02-03-a.html
There's an equivalent driver for 10.10.4 also available, but I can't find the link anymore.
I was previously more or less neck and neck between CUDA and OpenCL modes in PPro (running an rMBP 11,3 - 2.7GHz, 16GB Ram GeForce 750M with 2GB RAM), with my istat reporting 35-40fps (but with worryingly little 'load' on the GPU processor & memory). With this new driver my OpenCL seems to be performing 10-15% faster in terms of FPS. No benchmarking or super-controlled testing I'm afraid, but comparing the same sequences before-and-after I'm now getting 40-50fps reported, with both processor and RAM on the GPU seeing much more exercise. 4K XAVC footage with a Lumetri LUT applied is playing back with far fewer dropped frames, and the whole experience is much more comfortable.
Apologies if anyone thinks this should've gone under another forum, but since there's so much talk of the challenges of 4K XAVC on this board, it seemed as though this little 'secret' could be of use to some of you.
Cheers,
jason
