Used the GH2 for a pro job! (thoughts on the application)

Hi there,

Hi Everyone,

exciting things are on the way as I gather... as a GH2 hack is on its way !

I am having serious issues with GH2, basically I get "trailing" or image doubling when panning at a certain pace in 24p (1080p and 720p). Analysing frame grams you can clearly see there is no blur, which would be normal, but a sort of twiching which is totally unacceptable at any level.

Camera went to serviving, they found nothing.

Right now I wrote to Panasonic UK and Japan to clarify this.
Anyone experiencing the very same issue? If this is it, I am hoping a software hack can fix this.

regards

Oh No, It seems you have camera 44745.0063 from production line c1255ty467. Inspector #7, should have never approved this cam from the 3rd production run on 9/21/2010, at 8:54 am. It seems to have a trailing effect. The amazing thing is it's only happened once, and ironicly enough, you have the camera. Your gonna have to send it to Vitaley, for further inspection.

Can you post a video sample of the problem on Vimeo ?

It's a lot easier to figure out if this is a common problem if we know exactly what you are talking about.

Hi,

I believe you can have a better undestanding by looking at the attached frame grabs.

Why in this tread.. well, i cannot see how you can get any professional work out of this camera if there is such a problem.

Panasonic serviced it and they returned the item as it was perfectly fine to them, so this is it.
No software conversion involved, no hertz involved, no nothing. If you know the existence of such a defect, you can see it even on the LCD bare eye.

Frame doubling when panning, or even moving around the camera, equals to no movie whatsoever.

Thanks everyone for helping out.

Looking at your thumbnails, I don't see any frame doubling, but I do see motion-blur. How fast are you panning ?

The rule of thumb for 24 fps panning is that an object should take at least 7 seconds to travel from one edge of the frame to the other. Faster than this and you end up with mostly motion-blur.

thanks for looking into it.

If you carefuly have a look at the poles you can see they are doubling .. there is a sort of ghosting going on. One pole (see the fixed thumbnail) becomes two poles with blur in the middle of them (see motion thumbnail).

Maybe it was a fast pan, possibly way out of the rule of thumb, but you do see fast pans in movies and if you take any frame grab there is not such a thing going on..

It still looks like one pole blurred to me, but the exposure during the motion blur appears to be a little un-even. Considering that nothing is sharp during this fast pan, I don't think you've anything to worry about.

If you can show me a shot with a double image with something in clear focus during the shot, then I think you've got a problem.

Very nice. One question. The articulating thing you have holding your monitor to the flash shoe of the GH2... what is it and where can I get one? Thanks.

I have a Small DP monitor and I would like to attach it to the flash shoe of my GH2.

They're available from $9 + shipping on eBay, B&H, Amazon...

Nice! This thread is still alive?! I used a manfrotto lcd hot shoe ball head, forget the model- maybe its just called "lcd"? Very solid though for the size + weight- it did cost $50 I think but is probably worth it as it doesnt slip when you lock it.

Car3o- For iso, I think I messed up here- I recall using iso400 when I should have been using iso320- just an oversight as I didnt have enough time with the camera then or maybe it was too early and I didnt have enough coffee. The shadows had some noise in them I ended up removing with neatvideo which worked very well.

For the end result, honestly, it got butchered by the client/agency dance in editorial- Main killer was during the edit revision process- the music kept getting so quiet that you couldn't hear it- Not sure why... but they kept asking it quieter and quieter so after a long fight I got tired of pushing back.
But God bless them, They make great products and this chair is kickass if you have the money.

Pretend the music is louder and the animation is better : )

This looks great, but how frustrating not to be able to match the audio levels, especially at the end! Very nice footage though.

Well, the video makes me want to get some of these cool chairs, so - mission acomplished

I have one of these but sadly it will not lock very well (using it on an H4n) so I ended up with the manfrotto as well:
