Used Mac Pro

One of my buddies is trying to sell me his Mac Pro.
It includes:

2 X 2.8ghz quad core
8gbs of ram
nvidia 8800gt
Aiport express
2 years left of Apple care for a total price of $3100.

Now, I built his same machine, with the same ram and everything with an additional year of the Apple car plan for $3134 brand new.

He obviously hasn't really given me a deal. So now I def. going to offer him something less than that. But how much less.

Its about 1yr old and in good condition, but is still used. So what percentage should I take off. I was thinking either 15-20% or $2400.

What do ya'll think?

You can get a refurbished one direct from apple for even less. Mine was about $2300 I think. And then you can get more RAM from macsales.com for cheap ($150?). Apple care is another $250, but you would get 3 years.

You should offer less than $2400, in my opinion.

Yeah, go refurbished. Crucial.com has killer prices on RAM, too. A buddy of mine just picked up 12GB for $500.

2K would be my offer....if he's motivated, he'll take it.

2k even with the 8800gt and 8gbs of ram?
Thatd be a done deal for me. If he argues, what should I say to back my offer? I'm not to familiar with the resale price of macs.

Macs hold their value better than PCs but about 2/3 of new after being a year old sounds about right to me. You should tell him if he waits another six months, he will be lucky to get $1,500.00 for it. RAM and graphic card shouldn't add very much to the value honestly.

There is and will be no shortage of used gear on the market at killer prices in 2009. When you have people going into bankruptcy and losing their homes, there are and will be a lot of motivated sellers. Sad but true. Wait until this Summer if you want to see some deals.

That looks like a pretty legit listing to me, but people are clever and have pulled all sorts of scams on Ebay. If you are intent on purchasing a used Mac Pro, I would either get a refurb from Apple, or go to one of the known and reputable Mac refurb websites and buy one there.

I never buy anything over $300.00 on Ebay because there are so many scams on there. $300.00 is about the most I could lose without having a series mental breakdown if I was stupid enough to be scammed. If I were you, I would be going to Small Dog Computing, OWC or someone like that. They are definitely legit and have had very few complaints from customers. They can also offer you more support than some guy off of Ebay in most cases.

The FBI will tell you that the reason that most consumers are ripped off is not because there are a lot of scammers out there, it is because of their greed. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Confidence rackets and "Nigerian Princes" all succeed in their scams because people are greedy and naive. The story is as old as commerce, just because it is done on the web doesn't make it any different. So be smart and not greedy and go to a legit source. I used to trust Ebay but my Ebay account has been taken over three times, under three different names and I constantly receive phishing e-mails from people posing as Ebay security, trying to get my passwords. Ebay has turned into ripoff central as far as I am concerned.

I probably wouldnt have bought the Mac from ebay. But I would however use that to bring down my friends price.

what is fishy about that listing is the software that is included in the auction, he is going to throw in there the adobe CS4 suite and on top of that he is throwing Final cut studio plus many more, well that is a lot of cheese and it looks like a new computer so I donno, plus it does not mention anything anywhere about software licences or where the software is coming from? me personally I would not bid on it

Hell Dan, I just bought a 2006 Honda Odyssey on ebay,

You would have had a heart attack!

But I bet you went and met the owner and drove it before you bought it, didn't you? ;-) If you just bought it sight unseen on Ebay with no meeting with the owner and no test drive, you are right, coronary incident!

I think that approx. $2300 to $2600 is fair, so if you offered him $2400 I'd say you're right on the money. Anything above $2700 and you're better off getting it brand new and with 3 years of Apple care.

So, I tried to configure this exact mac pro at the apple store and came up with $4748.00. I didn't add anything beyond what is specified above. What am I doing wrong?

Nope, bought it from a dealer in Houston TX and had it shipped up to Alex, VA!

Sorry. I should have specified.

I'm a student which gets me the Mac Pro at $2,599.
The 8800gt is $135.
The airport is $45
The apple care is $199. (But a year has already passed so I deducted the price of that.)
The ram apple offers is extremely overpriced. He bought after-market ram for $200.

Its the more recent Mac pro. But he bought it when it first came out, which has been about a year.

So, ive doing a lot of searching, I found that Mac pro on ebay for $1,500, which may be a scam (as far as the software goes). And like other posters have said "2k", "$2,400". But as I see it right now, I will not go above $2,500. And even if he offers at $2,500, I'll probably still buy a new one instead. I'm trying to save money, but the savings have to be worth it. We'll see.

I should be talking to him tonight, and I'll let ya'll know the outcome.

thanks for all the replies.

The seller, johnnyboy, and a 100 rating on Ebay, so it might not be a scam after all. Also, the purchase is "protected" by PayPal.
