FS5: Used FS5 or used canon c100 markii

Well I have scoured all my on-line sources and I'm still conflicted if I should buy a lightly used FS5 or new c100 markii. Both cameras are getting older, but I do have a project coming up and deadline is approaching. I would wait for NAB 2017 and see what they both offer, I doubt either Sony or Canon will deliver whatever they announce before the fall. I have also considered getting on the GH5 bandwagon but unsure if they will deliver on the goods and getting a little tired of the DSLR workflow. I know this has been hashed out over and over again but any advise from the board?

As FS5 user, I love the size, the Electronic ND and the grip as it fit well how I use the camera. Other than that, you can shoot 4K but limited to 8bit internally and you have the option to capture Raw with an external recorder. The Center Scan function is nice too, available only when shooting internally in Full HD
I use the PZ 28-135mm lens when I need autofocus, I found the autofocus to be slow with the FS5, the C100M2 might be better in that area.

You might look after a used FS7 mk1 as the mk2 is now available. If you want good 4K out of the box the FS7 is the choice.

No question about it, you should definitely get an FS5.

Thanks Claude, I thought about a used FS7, it is a great camera. If I need a more robust 4k+ solution for a client, I think I'll rent for that purpose. I'm looking for a smaller form factor due to my accessories still in the DSLR world and wish to upgrade accessories incrementally. I plan on using the camera for events, documentary, and in-house direct to web projects. I enjoy the canon workflow but not shooting 8 bit, the FS5's 10bit and the high-speed frame rates are what I crave. Good point on the slow auto focus for the FS5, I had not thought about the slow autofocus.

Thanks Doug!! I know your coming from a non-bias place I want to thank you for teaching me so much over the years, a few years ago I purchased both your DVD/books on the EX3 and the F3; I learned so much it made both cameras a pleasure to work with. One of the benefits of the FS5...if I take the plunge, will be the purchase of your masterclass guide.

The High-Speed frame rate is indeed excellent on the FS5.
About the Autofocus, I do not use it much as it limit the framing options.
Doug's masterclass helped me to start quickly and efficiently with FS5. He also provide a Picture Profile that looks good to my eyes when I do not plan for grading.

There are rumors that there will be a replacement for the Canon C100 in the near future. I have heard no such rumors about a replacement for the FS5, which is barely more than a year old at this point. Feature for feature I think the FS5 beats the pants off of the C100. 10-bit HD, high FPS options, 4k shooting, variable ND, dual memory slots, center scan, ergonomics and on and on.

The FS5 is a very nice camera BUT - and its a big BUT - I seriously miss some more grown-up 4k capabilities. Maybe it will come now that Sony has announced its much faster SD cards. I would even be happy to pay for an internal 4k 10bit license. But if it doesnt come in the forseeable future, I'll probably sell my FS5.

There is now used FS7 mk1 on the market for a little more than a FS5. I would go for that option if I would need a second camera or 4K 10bit at good bitrates out of the camera.
I believe the FS5 is plenty of good features already.

Thank you all for responding, it helped me take the FS5 plunge!!! Doug Jenson I'll be on your website ferociously gobbling up your tutorials once it arrives next week!

I guess it's too late to matter, but I don't think the C100 II has a broadcast quality codec. I believe that was one of the (strange) ways they separated it from the C300.
