Used AF100's making me want a second one?

Used Af kit Prices seem to be getting crazy low, How low do you think they will go. I am semi thinking of grabbing a second one so I dont have to match with a different second camera. $2000 for another kit seems crazy! Anyone else thinking the same way? $700 more than a Gh3 and you get a real video camera, Crazy!

Why not! If you need multi-cam it's a great deal.
The F3 is also taking a beating. We are some crazy times. Heck I might buy a used F3 if it gets low enough.

Erik, have you ever tried mixing f3 footage with AF100 footage? I know you've shot with both (sorry, if off topic)

I had to do a pick up shot for a commercial shot with the F3 and the AF-100 footage was softer. The F3 sensor is sharper than the AF-100. Nobody noticed since it was color corrected to match. I used the same lens on both cameras. Zeiss CP.2 85mm.

If you are doing multi-cam shots for cable, TV and other things where time for color grading is not a lot if none, I would go for another AF100 if you are happy with what you get from the camera.
But you know what's even more crazy for a second camera? A GH2 for like $400 or less. You could have a 5 camera shooting before you reach the price of an used AF100. :)
I know, it's not a real video camera. But you already have a real video camera. The B camera can be a lesser camera. Your audio will all go to the main camera and with just a little color grading the Gh2 and AF100 can match pretty well.

But regardless, I personally would not consider another AF100 at this point in time. Not even the AF100a. I'm happy with a AF100+ 2x GH2s for multi camera when I need.

But prices are indeed crazy low, on basically everything. The FS100 is also selling for just a couple hundred more than AF100 and the F3 is already reaching what the AF100 MSRP is. I even considered buying an used F3 but I'm not sure I can put up with the IR contamination, which is pretty much like the EX3 and I hate, the lack of 1080p overcrank, only 2 ND filters and no waveform. Specially after being spoiled by the AF100. All that in a much heavier package too. The only thing I want in the F3 is S-log. The fact I shoot often with the dynamic range starved and highlight challenged AF100 only adds more hunger for S-log. But I'm not sure this is enough to make me want to put up with the F3 quirks.

Thanks.. yeah I know what you mean. I sometimes stress on focus because of that on the AF100 but it's usually OK. On topic, the prices on both the AF100 and the F3s are pretty low. I was thinking the same thing.

I am also eyeing the F3 as a nice used buy. If I wasn't always looking to continue to step up my work, I would get a second AF100.

I'll have an AF100 in the for sale section in a couple days. I'm gonna let it go for an unbeatable price along with the redrock eos adapter. I love the camera but it's not getting much use these days...

No way will I disappear. I love the Af100, but I have the BMC and my Gh3 on top of the 5dMK3 and xf105. The Af is just not getting the use and I feel somebody else can get shooting with it.

If you set the camera up and watch your clipping, the AF100 is one great camera. For the money, probably the best camera out there with all it's goodies under the hood. I know that when I sell it, the day after it's gone I will regret the sale. But I wanna contribute to my BMC so I can use the $'s.

I sold mine only because i was done with a feature and had no immediate project coming up (can still use my HVX for run of the mill jobs). Didn't want to take the depreciation hit. By the time I'm ready to shoot another, they might be under $1500. If there's not something a LOT better available I might just get another AF.

Have you really seen them go for $2,000? The best I'm finding is $3,000. I'm pretty much sold on getting one, moving up from my GH2. If you have any tips on finding a good deal, please share!

I checked Ebay completed auctions recently (an excellent guide to what things are really selling for) and found several bodies that sold for $2200-$2300. Some sold higher but had lots of accessories.

I've looked over the landscape and asked myself what I would use if I started another feature soon. No way I could find anything suitable for anywhere close to what I can buy an AF for. And I still have some of the lenses and adaptors!

I looked earlier and could have sworn that they were going higher. I think that means that I've researched this cam way too much for one day, seen too many different numbers following dollar signs, and it's time to take a break. lol. I'll give ebay another look.

I was just looking through the forum for sell posts, and there's some good deals in there. Do you all think that that is a generally safe way to go about buying a camera? What precautions should one take? Dusty, if you see this, have you sold yours yet?

Cheers.

If buying in this forum I would look for a long , active presence on the board from the seller. In that case you would be somewhat safe. On Ebay same thing, combined with high feedback rating, on items like camera gear, not $3 trinkets.

Anybody wanting to criticize the Panasonic AF100 or are thinking of purchasing one for indie film production should have a good set of visual tools at their disposal of great directors and writers using it. I truly believe it IS a DSLR Killer. Not a DSLR mass murderer but I have found these examples of what the camera can do in capable hands. Then I bought one with all kinds of goodies attached. Plenty of latitude to be successful with a good to great director. Some "Hype Suckers" have let this sleeping giant slip through their fingers and luckily for us all there ARE inexpensive AF100's on EBAY for under $2800! What a great day to take advantage of techie arrogance...lol. I am now shooting my first feature film with it. Check out the links and please spread them around so people have more than just "The Raid" (GREAT FILM BY THE WAY) as an example of what this great cinema grade camera can do. ENJOY:
