is anyone know could I use this product inside of HVX 200???

Kingston 5GB Datapak Portable PC Card Hard Drive [$150]

find it at B&H web site and it can do 120Mbit per sec seems good

thanks

Seems like it should work, at least for the lower data rate codecs (DVCPRO 50 and 720P@24).
100MB per second may not be reliable, your supposed to have 30% more bandwith than is necessary in order to ensure sufficient reliability. That is unless panasonic has set up some proprietary recognition so that only P2 solid state media could be used, but I doubt that.
This could be a poor mans P2.

that's what had been trying to say but my english was kinda bad on my last posting. I have fostex sound recorder and a toshiba 5 gig pcm card- the same form and measurement as the P2 card.

I think that P2 is proprietary, and you will not be able to use just any PC card to record. I think Panny has their own special algorithm to "RAID" the data to 4 chips so that they can sustain a high throughput. But that's only my guess.

You know, my guess (and untested of course) is that this would work, at least as well as any potential non-P2 solution might... by the same fact that the P2 card drops into a notebook and reads/writes indicates that the data is stored in a very ordinary fashion. The "RAID"ing won't impact the file system or data structure.

In the case of this Kingston device... is there enough overhead to not drop frames... will remain unknown until someone tries. This could be the lowest cost alternative yet, but we won't know until someone tries it out. Same situation with using a 133X compact flash card stuck in an adapter... should work, but...

I think the only thing magical about P2 is a.) sustained high speed due to raiding 4 SD memory chips, useful for recording and high speed dubbing and b.) complete Q&A testing and shock protection.

To flip this whole debate on it's head, you should be able to use a Panasonic P2 card as a -very- expensive, super reliable 8 gig harddrive for your notebook. :)

You make a good point. If any PC can read a P2 card, then there's a good possibility that the HVX should be able to write to any PC card. Whether or not the card can keep up with the data rate is another matter.

Now that Kingston card is a PC card type 2, which is thicker than a PC card type 1. I'm not sure which type of PC card the P2 is, but it looks pretty thin, so I'm tempted to say that it's a type 1. If it's type 1, then the Kingston card wouldn't fit in the slot. But you can go buy an 8G compact flash card for $725 and a PC card adapter for $15, and you might have a cheaper P2 card. You would need a data rate of at 12.5MB/sec (83.3x) to get the 1080i mode, though. I don't see that at B&H yet, but the 720p rates are certainly possible today. Compact flash prices would probably drop faster than P2 prices because they have higher volumes.

BTW, the Kingston micro drive lists a max transfer rate of 120Mb/sec, but I don't think that's sustainable over long periods of time.

Somewhere in my online digging I've seen the Lexar or Sandisk cards available at 133X and right now in the 4gig sizes...

Oh, Amazon.com...

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0008D76L0/qid=1124884800/sr=8-4/ref=pd_bbs_4/103-9666949-3737424?v=glance&s=electronics&n=507846

Someone should give this a go when the HVX comes out... could work.

You're right! I always thought the Sandisk Extreme III's just had extended temp range, but I guess they're twice the speed, too. (I actually have one, but only 512k, though). At 20MB/sec, it can certainly handle the 1080i speed! If this works, I'm sure that Panny will either drop the P2 prices or they'll be a lot of people using compact flash cards.

Does anybody have an SPX800? We would love to find out if it can record to any PC card, not just P2 cards.
