Hey ! what happening to the US dollar, now that I have bought everything I need, the US dollar is down to 1 USD = 0.947 CDN. We had never seen that before, even with that strong CDN dollar price are still higher in Canadian stores. : ( We used to say Canadian Peso, Canadian Tire money or colored money a few year ago, no more.

Thanks for rubbing it in.
:)

Yeah, someone should have made a Hallows Fest entry about the devaluation of the dollar....that's the scariest thing I've seen in a while.

I would also like to rub it in. The aussie dollar is almost 92 US cents, the best I can remember it's been. Will be a little less painful to purchase my 32gb p2 now!

EDIT: I should add the aussie dollar bought only about 55 US cents just 3 or so years ago, so it's a good time for us to invade -- I mean, holiday in your fine country.

While we're rubbing things in...

...say goodbye to runaway production comin' to ya from the US, Canada!

I bought property in Canada when it was .65 to 1 US dollar. Now it' 1.06 to 1 US Dollar. My investment doubled just on the currency increase, and then doubled again thanks to the run up in real estate values. Might be time to sell soon!

thank goodness i'm too poor to travel!

oh wait, that's not a good thing.

nevermind...

:undecided

Whats ridiculous is that our prices haven't dropped, for example, The American Cinematographer magazine on my desk has this - 5.95 USD, 8.95 CDN.

Subscribe using a US PO box...?

I actually get them for free, cos we advertise in it. But I was just using that as an example. Like you can't cross the border to buy a car and legally pay the tax on it cos the US dealerships aren't allowed to sell to Canadians. Theres a lot of stuff like that going on. A pair of shoes could be 89.00 CDN, but 59.00 USD and hour south. Everything is so cheap in the US. Some of the larger retail stores are starting to gradually lower there prices here though.

This is why I never believed much in supply side economics. The theory that if a companies profit increases (or taxes get cut) they'll cut prices of their product and pass on the savings to the consumer, boosting the economy. Doesn't work with magazines as much as doesn't work with oil. They'll charge what the market will bare.

This drop in the dollar reminds me of when in about 1991 people from Argentina were coming to Florida because things were so cheap in the US!

Thats funny, cos in 1991 I went to Florida with my family and yeah, everything was dirt cheap.

The last time our money was worth more then the US dollar was back in the 60s, or maybe late 50s...what sucks is that the prices haven't been adjusted, but then again, those prices probably aren't just contingent on currency rates.

For example, a DVX 100b costs $2999 here now....and can be had for $500 less in the US without doing much shopping around. Factor in the exchange, and border runs for expensive mics, tripods, and other gear sound more and more worth it every day.

From what I have been told by people in the biz, the reason US productions came up here was for tax breaks and rebates. Even when we were at 65 cents, the wages of a grip here compared to a grip (or whatever union job) in California balanced out somewhat, but it was the tax incentives that kept the US productions coming up here. I think there was a call for California to match the tax incentives at one point a few years back...not sure what happened there.

I don't know if the tax breaks will make up for a guy earning $30 an hour to move lights with the dollar being as high as it is now. Things are going to get interesting around here....

maybe now canadians will finally realize that NAFTA only profits the US and noone else.

*not impressed*

the real question is: should I open a US account and start speculating in US currency now or wait till it drops further? does anyone have a time machine so they can go forward a year and tell me what the exchange rate is at that time? I'd really like to know.
