USB to PCMCIA adapter: will this work?

No USB adapter works (other than the Panasonic 2-slot and 5-slot units, and those are $2000 to $2500).

A PCI slot adapter will work, but requires you to insert the card in the back of the computer.

Barry, I just wanted to check and see why you say that no USB adapter will work.

AFAIK, the only thing that is required is 32-bit Cardbus support and the ability to install Panasonic's P2 drivers -- that is the case with the adapter that pjletofsky found when using Windows.

As I understand that device, its drivers work only with wireless modems.

According to the manufacturer's website, the PCD-X/U132-E external USB device supports Type I or II PCMCIA cards including FLASH memory, ATA hard disks and wireless cards -- that information is on their Detailed Specifications page. I still think this will work.

We've been looking for something for over a year, I've bought a few and tried 'em, nothing has worked and it's my understanding that no USB adapter can work unless it has a full motherboard, PCI bus, translation chips, all sorts of stuff in it.

If you've found one that works, we'd all like to hear about it.

This device has been brought before, as Barry indicates.

Someone spoke with the manufacturer and the response was that it worked only with broadband modems.

But if you buy and it works, let us know.
