USB OTG drive, USB ON THE GO

No, no such thing as firewire on-the-go that I know of. You could offload it to a computer, but not directly to another drive.

Problem with MWave OTG Drive

Problem with MWave OTG Drive

Hi Guys,

I just purchased the recommended HDD enclosure from MWave. After I installed a Hard Drive and plug it into my Mac, it does not appear on my desktop or in "Disk Utility"... therefore, I can't format the damn thing.

I'm trying to figure out if it's me or if I'm dealing with a bad drive enclosure or HDD. Here are the stats:

I installed a brand new Samsung Model HM160JC, 160GB /
5400rpm 2.5" HDD.

When I turn the drive "on" I can hear it running.
I've charged the battery for at least 2.5 hours (as
recommended). When the drive is in the "on" position,
and plugged into my Mac (OS 10.4.10) the "Copy LED"
light is on as well as the Empty, 1/2, and Full
battery lights (all of them are lit).

Any advice?

Thanks!

The cam is supposed to format this drive. Or is that just for firewire drives?

Have you tried that?

Er... what?

It's my understanding that with a USB drive, I need to format it as FAT 32 (on a windows or Mac) first, then I should be able to use it with the camera.

Since my post, I've tried to plug it into a Windows machine, and Windows *does* recognize it (unlike my Mac). I formatted the drive FAT 32 but neither Windows nor Mac will load the drive when I plug it into a USB Port after the format.

I've formatted many drives in my day, so please understand that I'm not a newbie to that part of the process.

When I tried to plug the HDD into the camera (after switching to USB Device mode, and after I formatted the drive) the drive will give off the 5 beeb error code and the error light comes on.

I think I either have a bad drive enclosure or bad HDD... or is this enclosure just very, very hard to deal with (?)

Has anyone had this kind of trouble with the MWave drive enclosure??

I have an other brand OTG, but there I have a switch "USB OTG" and "cardreader" If the switch is on "USB OTG" it will not be recognized by my PC. Benn

Can you tell me the make / model of drive enclosure you're using?

The MWave (aka "Image Bank OTG) is cheaply made and after all of this hassle, I'm returning it.

Thanks!

Just tried it. Works. The connector is not heavy duty but it works. Ill test to see how much time it gives with a full battery. Could be usefull as an emergency backup.....

Could you share your experience with the Tekkeon powering the HVX?

FireWire does work for On-the-go

No, no such thing as firewire on-the-go that I know of. You could offload it to a computer, but not directly to another drive.

Barry, are you speaking specifically about the FS100 device? Up until last week, I had only ever used FireWire400 On-the-go with my HVX200. I recently used a Nexto Video Storage with the HVX200, over USB 2.0, and it worked well.

The "On The Go" I'm talking about is a specific protocol developed for USB, that allows a drive to be a host device which can take control of another target device and copy data off of that device.

There's no "on the go" protocol for firewire that I know of. Might exist, and I just don't know about it. I know OWC has a brand of firewire drives they call "on the go" but they don't do the same thing as USB On-The-Go protocol does. USB-OTG drives usually have a screen and controls, or at least a big ol' button, that you press to start it off; then they take control of whatever they're attached to and start snarking up all the data on the target device and copy it onto themselves.

Are you saying that you've got such a device?

I'm hoping that by bringing back this thread I can finally solve my storage problem and start using my HVX200.

I bought an HVX200 a couple week back and it came with two 8 Gb P2 cards (16 mins footage @1080). Since I can't afford more P2, a firestore and can't bring a laptop to the field with me at the moment - I wanted a cheap, portable hard drive so I could offload in the field multiple times and shoot more than 16 minutes at once.

I was going to go for a Lacie Rugged or a WD Studio Passport firewire drive - but of course you need an external power source if using a firewire drive in host mode - so that idea was out the window.

A USB portable hard drive was my last option, and I found out via these threads that in order to use a USB portable hard drive to offload - it would require On-The-GO (OTG) technology. Doing some research on this, I came across this OTG bridge device (battery powered), which I purchased cheaply on eBay:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...mp=1634&creative=6738&creativeASIN=B000CRPTCA

I then purchased the following hard drive, figuring I could use it together with the OTG bridge device to offload footage in the field in PC Mode without an external power source:

http://www.amazon.com/iomega-Select-500GB-Portable-34959/dp/B00449HAXI

Now came the test! I locked my P2 card, set my HVX200 to PC Mode and connected the camera to the OTG bridge device as instructed. The red light on the camera flashed and the "TURN POWER OFF" message was displayed on the camera's LCD, before the OTG bridge device could even register it.

So, I then unlocked the P2 card and tried the same thing again. This time it showed that it had connected to the OTG bridge device. I then tried to connect my USB portable drive to the bridge device which would not register (which could be due to requiring an external power source) but regardless of this, when I turned on my camera again the "P2 FORMAT ERROR" message was displayed and all my clips were gone. Even when I power my OTG bridge device drive via the mains and get it to recognise the hard drive - it wont allow me to pull the footage and still formats my P2 card. I'm totally confused! Could the fact that my hard drive is formatted in NTFS cause any problems - although it formats even without the hard drive being connected?

Could someone out there pretty please enlighten me on this problem. I'm pretty new to the HVX200/P2 and I really want to get out and shoot more.

Thanks folks
