HPX250: USB host mode & ext HD power

The brochure for the HPX250 says the camera will operate in USB 2.0 Host mode. So, my question (and hope) is, can you attach a USB powered hard disk to the camera and have the camera battery power the drive?

If not, anyone know of any cheap options for powering a USB drive by battery power? Perhaps an adapter of some sort that runs USB through it and allows a camera battery, or standard batteries to provide power?

I'm looking for a cheap way to transfer P2 footage in the field when no AC power is available, and with a single person crew. I'd like to not bring a computer with me just to offload P2 cards.

I did it with a 32GB USB thumb drive. If I remember correctly, the camera formatted the thumb drive as FAT16. I could read it with Windows 7 but it was a bear to reformat back to FAT32.

Yes the camera can supply bus power, so if you're using a small portable USB drive that gets its power from a single USB cable, the HPX250 can power that.
