I'm planning a trip to Europe in September and I want to do some shooting with the DVX 100. What will I need to pick up to convert the power supply so that I can charge my batteries overnight?
If your powersupply isn't 120-240, you'll need teensy little tiny transformer. Take a look at http://www.walkabouttravelgear.com/elect.htm for some examples. You won't need much of one...the thing only draws about 20 watts.
Oh. Make sure you have the proper plug for it, too. Europe has round prongs rather than flat.
The stock DVX power supply easily handles the 110 - 240 conversion. I've used it in England many times. You just need the plug adapters. But be careful using transformers to covert voltage. If you get a mongo one designed for a hair-dryer (1500 watts), they tend to fry converting a 20 watt load. I've bought several of them through the years before I figured this out.
So get a transformer designed for lower wattage if you need it to support some small electronic device.
One mistake never to make in hotels etc is never to plug such a transformer into a shaver unit in the bathroom, even though it is tempting to use it as an overnight charge thing cause it says 115 / 240 only use it for shavers. Dont even take a step down/up transformer and plug the charger into that. I dont know the techincal reason but two tranformers just wont do it, you can actually ruin one or both of them.
Modern mains chargers are switched mode power convertors and handle 100-240V. You don't need a transformer, but even if you put a 1500W resistive adapter in between, your charger will still be fine. Charger with an input transformer would fry in this case, but he time that camera battery chargers used a mains transformer is gone since a long time.
