****URGENT_Raw SxSxSDHC Error

I was shooting on my ex-1 with a Raw by Hoodman SxSxSDHC card adapter with a 32gb SanDisk Ultra 2 SDHC card. During the shoot a message came up on the ex-1 saying that there was a card error and that card A needed to be reformatted.

I immediately removed the card from the camera and plugged it into my SxS card slot on my MacBook Pro. Once I inserted the card it appeared in the finder. I saw a BPAV folder in it and clicked on it to see no contents inside. When I right clicked to get info it was calculating size and then the card ejected itself. A message came up saying that the card was ejected improperly. I took the card out and when I went to put it back into the slot the card was not read by the computer. I tried opening it with Clip Browser and it did not read it either.

I was recommended to a site called Prosofteng.com to obtain software called Data Rescue 3 for mac. I have yet to try it because I only have so much time to cover what we lost on our shoot and re-shoot it on another true SxS card. I felt uneasy about using a 3rd party card adapter and I guess I had good reason.
:badputer:

Has anyone else had this experience and if so how have you solved it?

We are under a serious deadline for this project so any help is EXTREMELY appreicated.

Thanks

Sean

If you put the card back into the camera (is it EX1/EX-3 or EX-1R, what firmware version?), do you have any messages, like card needs to be restored? Anyway, try to play the card (switch to Media). Does it play? If yes, play / fast forward it. It will halt playback if there is a media error (corrupted file). Then you can Expand & Divide the clip to save the footage - you will probably loose several seconds (try to copy it first onto the other card, then experiment with it...)

You can also try Freeware TestDisk & PhotoRec programs to see and save, what is there on the card:

If all else fails, we found a Frenchman living in Barcelona, Spain by the name of Benoît Joossen ( supportcw@mac.com ) who has a company called Aero Quartet... These guys Walk on Water and have written their own custom software to do the impossible. And they are extremely reasonable. They retrieved files from a SDHC card in an adapter that 8 Sony engineers said couldn't be done. (We had accidentally hit Delete All Clips). Can't say enough good things about Benoit. Good luck!!!!

Does anyone besides me think that the message was actually the card needs to be RESTORED not reformatted? It aggravates me that Sony has used two words that are so similiar, but mean such drastically different things. I have learned that when the camera wants to RESTORE a card, let it. It is just writing on the card to properly finish a file, or something like that, not a big deal unless it is not done.

Thanks for all your help. It said restored, not reformatted, my mistake. We were able to bring the SDHC card back to the studio and put it in a SD card reader on a PC. It was able to read the card and we were able to pull off about 86 clips and lost 42. We were able to cover ourselves and retrace our shots on an actual SxS card that day as well so we have a lot of extra coverage of what we couldn't retrieve.

Thanks again for all your advice everyone!
