FS7: URGENT Question's - WAVEFORM/ WHITE BALANCE/ CineEI setting/ SLOW MO!?!!?

Hey all,

I am renting an FS7 for a job, as currently waiting for my FS7 to arrive, and I have a few queries, questions which have been infuriating me!:

1) Turning WAVEFORM on (apparently quite complicated...if someone can help on this, as I have followed instruction I found on web, no luck!)

2) Dialling in WHITE BALANCE - can't seem to dial it in when in CUSTOM mode, (is there a short cut with buttons?????) then in CineEI its just 3 options, Can't dial in!?!

3) CUSTOM or CineEI mode? What is the difference?! Which is better?

4) SDI out - Apparently if you apply a LUT its then BAKED IN to footage...anyone know if there is a workaround?!

5) ISO on SLOW-MOTION/ S&Q mode - Change the ISO when is S&Q mode, but does not effect the camera, and no LUT is applied?!?!

I am on a shoot the rest of this week and into next, so ideal to know answers to these asap!!!

CHEERS!!

1) For waveform to appear I do believe you need to make sure HDMI is set to 1080p output (or off can't remember and don't have my cam beside me).

2) In custom mode I use the WB button on front of camera and balance off a target. In Cine EI it only has 3 presets on the switches) 3200, 4300, 5600. I could be off on the middle temp. So far although I haven't shot a lot I have found that in post with one of the 3 presets I can get close and finalize in post with temp adjustment in Catalyst Browser.

3)Custom is your traditional video camera picture profiles. Custom does not support luts but you can shoot in SLog3 or some of the hypergammas which still retain a good amount of DR just not full 14stops. Cine EI is like shooting film. The camera locks at its native ISO (2000) and uses the Exposure Index rating to move the middle grey point up and down. http://www.xdcam-user.com/2013/12/cine-ei-mode-when-recording-s-log23-and-raw-on-the-f5-and-f55/ Which one is better depends on how you use the camera and what you prefer. Noise Reduction is turned off in CineEI so that may matter or not depending on what you are shooting.

4) The SDI outs are the different video streams the camera is processing. Turning luts on for all streams will burn it internal. In order for waveform to work you either need to turn all luts on or all luts off you can't currently view luts on the monitor and have the waveform work.

5) I'm not sure what this is. As I have shot very little S&Q so I have no idea why the ISO won't change for you.

1. You'll find the waveform in the VF menu under "display on/off". It only works if you have all mLUTs off or all mLUTs on. You also need to have HDMI set to 1080i in the output menu.

2. Nope. You can't dial in white balance. In custom mode you set a custom WB by using the bottom on the front. In CineEI mode you're right you only have three options.

3. Custom mode behaves like a video camera, WYSIWYG in VF. All settings are adjustable via the menus. CineEI mode behaves like a film camera.

4. Haven't tried that yet, but you'll certainly lose the Waveform.

5. I'm guessing you're in In cineEI mode?? ISO is ALWAYS 2000.

Don't stress it. I picked up the camera, had half a day to play before getting on a plane. I just shot in cineEI mode, with the L/M/H switches all set to EI2000. Used waveform and gray cards in combination with a light meter and monitored everything in SLog3 punching in with the magnify tool to check the noise. It all looks amazing.

In custom Mode the color controls ( sat, Kelvin, phase, offsets, ,matrix) etc are all similar to an F3 or an Ex-1.
If you are using LUT's in CINE EI be aware that one of the settings is SDI 1 and Internal Rec. That will record the LUT instead of SLog3. BEWARE
In CINE EI you won't have the waveform unless all LUT options are on including the one above to record the LUT. Hopefully this will be fixed later but for now >in CINE EI Slog3 recording you can get a LUT but no waveform .

From the amendments to the manual:

Video Signal Monitor Restrictions
Video Signal Monitor cannot be used if the SDI output is disabled.
Check the following settings:

  • [Output On/Off] >[SDI] in the Video menu
  • [Output Format] >[SDI] in the Video menu

Video Signal Monitor cannot be displayed under the following conditions:
  • When [Output Setting] >[4K/2K to HD Conv.] in the Video menu is set to [Edge Crop]
  • When [Monitor LUT] >[SDI1&Internal Rec], [SDI2], [HDMI], and [Viewfinder] in the Video menu are set to mixture of [MLUT On] and [MLUT Off]

THANKS EVERYONE!!!

What are people's suggestions for:

1) Extending the Arm on the side??

2) Extending the EVF arm?

3) Counter balancing the camera at the back end. (other than V-locks)

4) Side release plate, as arm gets in way on tripod!!?!

Cheers
