Hi Guys,

I am using a 7D and a Fostex Recorder. Mic: Rode NTG-2.

I will shoot some Behind the Scenes of a Event. I will not have much time to use a slate / clapperboard. Eveything must be done fast.

Now I am searching a good way and some tips how to deal with the recorder and 7d so that I can after easly syncronize the video with the audio.

How would you do?

Thank you guys.

You can do it without a slate. Try to clap or make a sound that you can use to line the waveforms up later.GJ

PS-- Just realized the 7D won't have an onboard mike, in which case you'll just have to eyeball the sync until it's right.

Hi,

the 7D record also the sound with the onboard mic. And separately I will record the sound with the fostex and the rode mic.

So you would suggest following solution:

1) press record on the fostex
2) press record on the 7d

Record Video and Audio

3) Stop recording on 7d
4) Stop recording on fostex

I maybe will not need on every shooting the audio. So that's mean I will have maybe 70 Videos and 30 Audio.

Which is the best way to avoid a lot of work on the post production without using a slate?

You have hands, and those are nature's clapperboard/slate. Clap or snap, just to give a hard sound that you can use as a sync point.

If you're not rolling audio on every take, just be sure to give some sort of verbal slate each time you do roll audio. To make it easy if you're running with little/no support crew, just read the file name from the Fostex out loud once both audio and video are rolling. That will give you a quick and easy way to match the audio to the video. The Fostex has a couple of different file naming modes, so choose one that creates easy names (the default on the FR2-LE, for example, as a convoluted string of numbers representing date and time... but the scene/take mode is much easier to read).

Hi Guys!

Thank you very much. I found also a nice way. I tried this tool and it works great!!!!!! http://www.singularsoftware.com/howto_pe_vegas.html

My test:

I shot 20 videos and 8 Audio.

I import all audio and video files to vegas and start the PluralEyes Tool.

Result: Everything was sync and I didnt use a slate or a specific signal!! Unbelivable!

Thank you guys!

PluralEyes can help with perhaps 90% or more clips. For the rest, you'll still need a conventional way to help you sync in post production.

Occasionally, this little great program seems to be just lost. Not sure why or how to totally avoid that. You can choose to use the "work harder" option of the program, but perhaps half of the time that option makes things only worse. The good news is: if it's unsure, it will leave unsync'ed clips separate. Either it can't sync, or it does an excellent job.
