Uprez SD DVX footage?

I see all of these DVD up-converters for playing SD DVDs on an HDTV to make it look better. Is there a way in post to "uprez" SD footage? Say I shot on an HVX at 720p30p, and the DVX at 480i30p, and I want to deliver in HD on Blu Ray, and I want to intercut between some HVX and DVX footage.

So, can I uprez the DVX footage to HD to do this? Sure it probably wouldn't look as sharp, right? But would it work OK, similar a dvd upconverter?

How can I do this, if possible?

Don't forget you'll be uprezzing the HVX footage as well because Bluray is 1080p...not 720p. It might not look so great either, better be some awesome DVX footage to intercut with the HVX. Thats just my guess.

You can't have Blu-Ray at 720p??

I wanted to use the DVX because it is so much better in lowlight for some live event stuff.

You can put whatever you want on a Blu-Ray disk. It's just data. They say that Blu-Ray can do 1080p because it has the space required for that big of a file. You can put SD footage on it if you want to. 720p will work.

Ok, that's what I thought.

Anyway - back to the original question..

Yes you can "upconvert" SD to HD it obviously wont look as sharp like you said. There are utilities out there to help the upscaling algorithims. Its quite easy to "uprez" your footage (any footage for that matter) you just scale up your SD footage to a HD resolution. in your editor of choice.
create a HD project, drag your sd resolution footage and simple drag it to fit the screen (cropped stretched or pillar bars, your choice) and poof your footage just upscaled! obviously it wont meet that HD crispness. but that is what you call "uprezzing"

A few programs though help that process to make the footage look better however (like i mentioned, the way they deal with the upscaling algorithims) a few suggestions are Instant HD by redgiant (magic bullet) or ReSizer by digital anarchy. both in the sub 100$ level and do a fair job. hope this helps

I'm going to give this a try in AE. Has anyone tried a slight blur to help diffuse the pixels?

vidwerk.

Im sure that using a slight blur to cover up some pixelation would work but i dont think it is a good idea for you are trying to get up to HD which is nice and crisp, not blurry. But hey it doesn't cost you anything to try it.
