"Upres" from SD to SD????

I was given a task to "upres" clips in Avid from 15:1 SD (what they were orig. digitized as) to 1:1 SD. Now, the native footage is HDV. I find this odd. A colleague is telling me this shouldnt be done, as any upres-ing should ALWAYS be to the native resolution, not something in between. He said I should upres the clips to the native resolution (HDV) then TRANSCODE those clips to 1:1 SD. The person that gave me the task disagrees and says can easily upres them just to regular SD 1:1.

I would simply recapture at 1:1 SD. Transcoding is just going to double the time it takes to get to the same place.

I am trying to understand where these people are coming from with their reasonings. My colleague keeps stressing "ALWAYS RECAPTURE OR UPRES TO THE NATIVE RESOLUTION!" Is this true? Where is he coming from with this? I always like to clarify things for future situations! Thanks!

He's probably thinking that it will protect you from having to do this yet again when the client inevitably asks for the program in HD in a few weeks.

Recapturing from HDV tapes has always been a fickle process. Here, we bump all our HDV masters to HDCAM and digitize from those so we have consistent timecode from a more robust format.

ok so technically, what wants to do is legit, correct? It just takes longer but makes more sense since we almost definitely will need the same stuff captured in HDV later.

But if we were sure we wouldnt need it and we just wanted a quick fix, just recapturing would be the best bet?

Thanks for your help. Just making sure either option isnt a complete mistake.

yeah, recapturing will 1:1 SD will complete this version. If they want HD later, you'll have to do it again. If you recapture in HD, finish in HD and give them a downconverted SD master, you've still got the HD ready to go should they ever come back asking for it.

And that's what we do here... master everything in HD, then deliver what the client needs from that.

HD is the broad catch-all term. within that there are a variety of forms HD can take. One of them, is the HDV format.
