Uploading files from camera to HD

I am trying to upload files from the camera to my computer hard drive for the first time. I shot a five second test file and then uploaded it with the USB cable. I think I was successful, although I am confused as to why this five second file shows up as a folder called "AVCHD" within which are subfolders AVCHDTN and BDMV, and inside the BDMV subfolder are additional subfolders called CLIPNF, PLAYLIST, and STREAM folders. The actual file (MTS) is in the STREAM folder. Why so many folders created by one simple file? Can anyone tell me what all these other folders are? Why does the file not just show up in the computer by itself? Thank you.

AVCHD is a standard video format and thats how its structure is setup. It relies on the folder structure for playback in camera/bluray player/ and FC Log&Transfer. Otherwise you only need the MTS files in the stream folder if you are using another NLE that can handle raw MTS files.

Best thing to do is backup the whole "PRIVATE" folder.
