Upgrading? Or do I have to buy full?

I have an academic version of Avid MC 2.7.2. Can I pay upgrade price for MC 5.5, or do I have to buy the full version?

It shouldn't be a problem...MC academic is the same program as the full version except for price (obviously) and it doesn't come bundled with all the extras like BCC and Sorenson, but it should be fine...I know back in '06 when they first released MC as software standalone I was able to upgrade from my Xpress Pro academic to the MC upgrade just fine...

Academic version is the way to go. It wouldn't be an upgrade... it would be a replacement. Uninstall the old version, drop in MC5.5, which is kick "buns" by the way.

If you're still a student, you can get the latest version at the academic rate (I know I'm stating the obvious) and then the next 4 years of upgrades are free (to future academic versions).

If you are no longer a student, you can upgrade from the academic license to a commercial license, but you'll need to do that directly through Avid.

Based on the version you have 2.7.2, I'm guessing you're no longer a student because that's a pretty old version of the software. Upgrade prices depend on which version your upgrading from. And actually, it is possible that there is no upgrade path from such an old version to 5.5 (regardless of if you're coming from academic or commercial).

Anyway, you need to do this through Avid directly. The person who will almost certainly be able to answer your questions though is Marianna Montague. You can find her at Avid's Community forum: http://community.avid.com/members/Marianna/default.aspx or here: marianna.montague@avid.com

After you've figured out what's possible, I hope you'll post again here to tell us what the result was (future visitors to this site might also like to know).

Good luck!

Actually, you can get the academic version at www.academicsuperstore.com in 24 hrs. with a lot less hassle.

True. What I meant was that if you want to upgrade FROM the Academic version TO the Commercial version, you have to go through Avid. In my experience, they're actually very easy to work with.....
Makes more sense. :) I just assumed if one hasn't upgraded in so long, that $295.00 is better than $2,495.00. But you're totally right. When upgrading Avid is very accommodating.
