Upgrading Camera, Canon XL2 or DVX100B?

the DVX100B should give you terrific footage right out of the box. .

You guys all said to me "The DVX100B is NOT an out of the box cam" so is it or not?!? can I take it right outta the box and hit record and get good footage!? (you folks confuse me)

it will give you a nice image on F5. but its nowhere near how good the footage will look once you learn the settings.

35mm

35mm

Hey,

I am thinking of puting my money into a 35mm adapter but i dont know which one to choose. i will have 1K to spend by december, so if u guys could reccomend the best at 1K or lower that would be sweet and alot of help to me!

Also, do lenses for Digital SLRs work with these adapters or am i going to need ta shell out more money for Primes?????

Thanks,
Mike

It all depends on the look u want from the camera. if u want a flat film look with the highest dynamic range possible from the camera, then u will get that A-OK with the DVX out of the box on Scene 6, but if u want a more contrastly look with crushed blacks and so on (LIKE ME :) ) then u are going to need to fiddle with the Scene File menu. I myself would not think of buying a camera like the DVX if i was not going to mess with the settings alot!

Mike

If you mess up is there like a reset button?

P.S
can someone post a screenshot or video shot w/ the DVX100B out of the box?

It's the setting if you want to shoot in 24pA. I got my first DVX yesterday and found it pretty simple to adjust the scene file settings. It only takes like five seconds.

Sub 1k..... SgPRO, Brevis, Go35... all good sub 1k.

But DSLR wont work well because if they focus electronically youre screwed. also you wont be able to change apeture.

the camera has a dial on tha back, F1-F6. EAch one you can save a preset look. IT comes out of the box with F5 and F6 set in 24p and 24pA respectivley. both of them are set up to give you a good neutral picture. But i would never use what came out of the box. the real fun is experimenting.

a single grab isn't gonna show you much.

go the the dvx clips/grabs section and look at some videos. chances are all were either 24p or 24pa. plus, you can see what types of image you will be able to get

on each scene file setting, it's pretty easy to go into the menu and adjust color settings to get a different looking image. plus it comes with barry's book, which will make you a master of the scene files in no time.

so yes, you can take it out of the box and shoot with the default settings, and you might want to do that to start with. but eventually you'll want to tweak it according to whatever you're shooting. scene files along with some color correction and you can get some amazing footage. again, just look at the clips/grabs section

F5 straight out of camera

This was the day i got my DVX... Back in the day.....

The DVX and HVX are blessed with what many consider the best gamma curves and color matrixes around (at least if you're trying to emulate film). Setting gamma and matrix to cine-like is going to give you a pretty nice image out of the box. That said, knowing how to maximize the other settings, things like master pedistal, color temp, chroma level, detail, ect is going to give you even better looking images (as is the ability to light something well). The point is that the pansonic presets for the DVX and HVX look pretty good but you can get more than pretty good if you tinker and that's worth it for many of us.

I seen alot of those dvx100 footage seems pretty good but i think mostly done by program to enhance the image quality. Last time i was working on an dvx100 cam its not that really impressive like they all said it supposed to be. I think both of them are the same but i prefer to like the XL2 even though the eye LCD suck big time its still good to me. As long as you can mess with the setting you will get a impressive looking image. My brother in-law own a XL2 and when he show me some of his work it look awesome when the lighting is right. Everyone has their own taste to what they like. Like other's saying if you have a awesome cam and you don't know how to use it right, its just a pieace of crap and aint doing you any good anyway. Other than lighting you had to have a good visual when come to cinematography and directing thats what sell. Another thing is more and more cam are coming out, just make me don't want to buy these old cam but to get the new cam. Great job to those who make great video using the DVX100.
