Upgrade?

I have a dvx100a. after some research i have some questions. Does the HVX's HD capabilities and p2 functionality require more from my system? like, is my computer going to be powerfull enough for HD? Also, how long can i film on 1 p2 card? I have the budget for the camera, i am just wondering if this upgrade to HD is right for me at this time, considereing there is no budget for anythign else besides the camera.

Sure, HD requires more processing power than DV editing. Whether your current system can handle it depends on what you have -- you might want to provide some details.

If nothing else, consider that archiving HD requires LOTS of non-MiniDV tape storage, up to 1GB/minute. Archiving strategies vary, but it may mean buying inexpensive hard drives as they go on sale and putting them in an external enclosure or caddy.

If you just haea budget for the camera, I would instead start buying things you can use for both cameras, maybe:

1. firestore-fs100 (you can use it for your dv camera now)
2. buy a fast computer and software that can do HD and DV

That way you can use both now.
When you get more money again, then you can get the HVX200 and use your stuff with the new system.

The HVX200 requires one to have about double the cost of the camera to truely enjoy. Also, each day lowers the price for P2 cards, so buying "everything else"
will better prepare you. in my opinion.

Wonder no more. It is not right for you at this time. If all you can afford is the camera, then that would be like buying a car and not having any money for gas.
You will need lots of hard drive storage space and your old 486 computer will not handle the HD footage.

I think ozduc is right. There are several other costs required to support the HVX and it's HD product. It needs much gas and oil changes. I would not upgrade unless you have paying clients that will support the extra cash.
