Upgrade to Leopard?

Hey all,

Just saw that leopard is about to be released on the 26th. Any ideas on the upgrade? only had a mac since tiger, so dont know how rocky the upgrade path is. Like the new features, dont want it to interfere with my editing tho.

Don't upgrade in the middle of a project.

I upgraded to Tiger the first day it was released and haven't had any issues. I'm sure I'll go down to the Des Moines Apple store on the 26th and pick up Leopard and give it a go.
 
well nuts. I was just getting ready to upgrade my FCS to 6. I only use my Mac Pro for FCS. Do I get any benefits from Leopard, specifically for editing? I realize probawlby too early to tell. I think I'll go ahead and do the FCS 2 and take Blaine's advice.
 
I'd take it slow- at least wait for the early adopters to test the waters especially mid project.

It looks pretty awesome, but apart from cosmetics I'm not sure I'll need it. I use my Mac for editing, designing, and any email/web stuff I'll need for video work.

I wonder how the new Time Machine would affect me in, say mid-render, presuming it regularly backs up in the background... and also would have some concern that all the bells and whistles would suck up processing and RAM. Please correct me if that concern is baseless!

I'd wait a while too... hang around the discussions on apple.com... see what people are saying.
 
We'll see what happens with it. Im getting it just because I bought my new iMac on the 2nd of October. Which in turn means i only pay 10 bucks for leopard. Check http://www.apple.com/macosx/uptodate/ if you are in the same boat.

All background processes take CPU time and memory. The bells and whistles of leopard seem to be mostly cosmetic. Which means more CPU time and memory. Glad i got 4 gigs in my machine. Will come in handy I think.
 
I have two thoughts on time machine...

1. Either they have done it the wrong way, in that it does backup stuff on the fly, and so therefore takes up a lot of hdd performance.

2. they have done it the right way by intergrating it further into the base operating system at a lower level, and it does some nifty stuff that i know other filessystems do so that snapshots like they are talking about really dont take up that much more room. Im interested to see how time machine is done really.

anyway, i think that time machine will be invaluable in some respects, for projects and stuff like that.

The "innovators" will be buying first....then the "early adopters" will follow based on what they're hearing.

I will be part of the early majority.

The stacking feature looks cool.
 
If you do... make sure you load it on a separate HD... that way, if anything goes wrong, you can still work off of Tiger.

I'll probably get it fairly soon, but I'll keep a SuperDuper'ed copy of my existing system on an external drive. Of course, getting Leopard means getting yet another external drive. Yeesh.
 
so far I havn't read about any technical improvements Leopard will bring forth, just new features. New features might be interesting for consumers, but for people who work with their machines, it would be nice to hear if anything (i.e. FCS) will be faster, will there be better memory usage, true 64 bit adressing, better multiprocessor use, etc... I don't know anything about the technology behind the software I use, but I like it, when it's fast and stable... shiny design doesn't appeal to me.
 
Leopard kinda smells like more marketing mojo as if this upgrade were going to change EVERYTHING! Again! Wait it out. After all, is there really a necessary function that you have seriously not been able to live without? Is your OS presently 'happy'?

Don't get me wrong - I'm a huge Mac fan but Steve Jobs is only a few steps removed from PT Barnum. iPhone anyone?
 
Well I was under the distinct impression that this iteration was designed to take full advantage of multi core systems unlike its predecessor.
 
I stand corrected.... Looks pretty sweet at 2nd glance. Marketing brainwash complete.

Still need to wait on some necessary drivers though.
 
Just did the upgrade. Took about 40 minutes. Of course, most of my little hack programs (WindowShade, ASM, MiniMail, etc.) no longer work. But no issues yet. Won't be able to do the Time Machine shuffle until tonight.
