I wasn't referring to any one person in particular, just that it seems that the general consensus of the moderators/administration/whatever the titles are, is that the HVX just doesn't have any issue with artifacting or noise at all. It would be one thing to say "the camera has some limitations with its codec and does display significant amounts of noise in many situations, but with all of its other strengths it is absolutely still the camera for me." But that's not the message that's being delivered; a good deal of the posts related to this topic by people in the administrative group are replies like "I can't see the noise at all, people must be crazy!" and "the artifacting doesn't exist, don't believe what you're reading!" like it's some conspiracy that they are sworn to protect. The only reason the issue keeps coming up is that different people keep getting the camera and bringing up the issue that, "wow, the camera is pretty slow and noisy, and I wasn't expecting that." If the topic was made more clear from the powers that be, I think people would better know what the HVX is and isn't capable of and they'd be more prepared if they choose to buy it. Merely pretending the issue doesn't exist is only going to perpetuate the problem because then it keeps getting brought up. That's all I was saying.Isaac_Brody said:I think you're referring to me, "one of those moderators who finds the constant noise gripes annoying." I think I find it annoying that people don't use the same fine tooth comb to scrutinize HDV compression blocks and noise. From the JVC and Canon footage I've looked at I find the compression blocking from action scenes to be worse than the noise issues from all three cams. And I think it has the best color handling of all three cams.
Do they? Can you get Evin to make a post that says "we know there is a noise issue - it's there, yep, and we don't like it."? How about Barry? John? Jarred? Maybe I've just missed something.Rhydon said:Also, everyone knows theres a noise issue. Its there, yep, Panasonic will fix it, its something their people/customers dont like.
I absolutely agree with you that the newest crop of "low-end" HD cameras leave a lot to be desired. Right now I don't feel that any of them really deliver. That's what is most unfortunate, because they (Panasonic in particular) have really done a great job of maintaining image quality throughout their entire range of SD equipment. With a DVX, maybe you won't find the 2/3" DOF or range of latitude that you'd get with an SDX, but you still get an amazing clear picture that delivers. The disparity between the higher and lower end HD cameras is far greater. Maybe 1/3" CCDs and HD just don't mix... that could very well be. But to praise a camera like the HVX as the second coming when it needs a lot of work doesn't do any of us any good. How is Panasonic supposed to make improvements on their CCD or codec if all they hear is that the mediocre performance is absolutely adequate for their base customer? By ignoring the problems, nothing gets fixed, and you slow down progression.Isaac_Brody said:All of the sub 10k cams have (pick your poison) issues and compromises.
There's a lot about the HVX to be joyful of, but it isn't without its faults. Even if you like the camera immensely and it is doing everything you need it to, it can still be improved. It would be nice if the mods weren't so quick to dismiss the opinions and findings of longtime respected users (disjecta, in this case - I'm not referring to myself) just because they don't want anyone's perception of the HVX to be tainted.
One last footnote - I think a lot of the problem gets neutralized when you downconvert to SD. Pixels are blurred and a lot of the artifacting gets smoothed out. Since most of the footage people have been seeing online is shrunk down for the web, it's very difficult to see what people are talking about in the raw footage. And yes, most people only have SD viewing equipment right now so it's not a big deal. But why spend $6,000+ on an HVX with P2 cards if you can get even better (faster) SD performance from the DVX that now costs under $3,000? Along with fellow DVXUser CJ Roy, I was one of the camera operators on the "Shake That Ass" music video that Danilo posted in the clips section. And I can tell you, the shrunken-down, heavily crushed/corrected video looks night and day different from the raw frames we shot. We had a really long discussion about the usability of the footage at all for Hi-Def distribution because neither of us were satisfied with what we were getting. It is what it is, and for a clip on the web, it works. But as an HD camera, we're far from being where we need to be. Hopefully time will fix some of these issues.
