I have a PPC Mac tower.

looking at getting a new mac pro tower

can i upgrade my Final Cut studio 2 to the new version and take that over to my new tower - or do i have to buy and install entirely new version?

u can upgrade(exchange) your fcs2 to an fcs3, that's like $300 i think.

it's a new version, not an upgrade. even if they look very similar.

either way, ur going to install a fresh copy of the software and it doesn't work or install in ppc as far as i know.

Just to be clear:

so i can get the new machine - and simply upgrade my current Final Cut Studio 2 to 3 ?

ie - i dont have to buy a whole new (full price) Final Cut Studio 3 for the new machine ?

As long as it's not an academic version, yes you can upgrade. At the very worst, you would need to install FCS2 first before installing the new FCS (3). But I really don't think you would need to.

If you do, just make a disk image of your system with all the software you want on it installed. ( no user files or projects ) You can use Netgear's free Carbon Copy Cloner.

That way you have disk image backup of your system in case anything goes wrong or hardware dies down the road. It's faster to restore from a disk image then to install all the software over again. Use a Time Machine only drive to backup all the user files.
