IMO, the 012 sounds smoother than a 4053.. but doesn't have the high output level, (10mv vs. 20mv) which is very important if using budget recorders and mixers. The 012 is shorter and lighter as though but subject to handling/wind noise.
Many other inherent caveats with buying an 012 as well.... counterfeits, quality control issues. IMO, the best sourse for an Oktava is 'The Sound Room', who tests and handpicks the best. Naturally this custom services will cost more. Not to be confused with the 'Dorsey mod' which is a different procedure all together, and the combined cost is as much as a 4053. The mod will not increace the output much though. Not an easy decision. OR.. you could buy an 012 sight unseen on eBay for cheap if yo' feelin lucky. Operator's skills are another factor all together of course.
